Storen Slams Locker, Breaks Right Thumb

Saturday, September 12

The Washington Post's Chelsea Janes passed along the announcement on Storen's status from Nationals manager Matt Williams. Storen's injury was self-inflicted after he slammed his locker shut in frustration over allowing a home run in Washington's loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday.

"Regretful that it happened," Williams said, when asked about the pitcher's feelings, according to the Associated Press (via ESPN.com), "and a little bit embarrassed about it, of course. He's a competitor, and he was frustrated and made a mistake."

He has yielded one earned run in three of his past four appearances and has blown his past three save opportunities. He had converted 29 of his prior 31 chances for the year.

Bill Baer of NBC Sports referenced the struggles Storen has endured of late:

Wednesday's game marked the Nationals' third straight loss, and the team stretched it to four in a row Friday against the Marlins. This development involving Storen is the latest in a long line of injuries for Washington and comes on the heels of All-Star Bryce Harper's criticism of the club's fans during the Mets series.

It's going to be difficult for the Nationals to make a late playoff push without a key cog from their bullpen available. Already dealing with World Series expectations, Williams' team has been hit with another harsh blow as the regular season winds down.
