US Open Tennis 2015: Live Stream, Key Stats for Djokovic vs. Federer Men's Final

Tom SunderlandSep 12, 2015

The top two players in the world will collide in Sunday's U.S. Open final as No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic looks to win his second title at Flushing Meadows, New York, against five-time champion Roger Federer.

The pair meet in a re-enactment of July's Wimbledon final, where it was Djokovic who walked away as the victor to bring his record against Federer to 20 victories in 41 encounters, the Swiss having triumphed in 21.

Sunday's matchup promises to go down as a fixture for the ages as 34-year-old Federer hopes to show he's still the same potent force he once was, despite having failed to claim a Grand Slam in over three years.

NEW YORK, NY - SEPTEMBER 11: Roger Federer of Switzerland returns a shot to Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland during their Men's Singles Semifinals match on Day Twelve of the 2015 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 11, 20

As fate would have it, an up-and-coming Djokovic came up against and was ultimately bested by Federer in the 2007 U.S. Open final, his first-ever appearance in a Grand Slam climax.

Eight years on and it's the Serb who's in his pomp while Federer creeps ever closer to retirement. ESPN Stats and Info suggests now might be the time for the apprentice (Djokovic) to illustrate why he's the master:

If Federer was to subvert the odds on Sunday and claim his first major crown since Wimbledon 2012, he would also become the oldest player to win the U.S. Open since Ken Rosewall in 1970, who was 35 at the time.

However, old though the veteran might be, he's still showing all the signs of being able to compete against those closer to their prime, as shown with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 rout of compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka in the semi-finals.

As impressive as that win was, however, Djokovic was even more domineering en route to a 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 trouncing of reigning champion Marin Cilic—a drastically one-sided affair.

Federer's chip-and-charge tactic has worked well in recent outings, as suggested by the official U.S. Open Twitter account, but Djokovic may not be so easily outsmarted as those to have already fallen at Fed's fingertips:

Speaking in terms of straight statistics, it's intriguing to examine how Federer has conserved energy at Flushing Meadows this year, opting for quick and powerful displays over long, drawn-out affairs.

According to BBC Sport, Djokovic has spent little over 12-and-a-quarter hours on the court at the 2015 U.S. Open while Federer is just shy of 10 hours thus far—a gap of around two-and-a-half-hours.

What's more, the Swiss has made a much more impressive 68 aces compared to Djokovic's 45, and while the Serb's athletic prowess may allow such for such disadvantages, it doesn't change the fact Federer will be charging for swift scores.

By all means, we're dealing with two unique characters of the sport, and Bet365 depicts just how rarely gifted the 2015 finalists are, having each accomplished a massive feat in Grand Slam final appearances:

Sunday's showdown is one of those where the figures could easily count for nought, especially after Federer cruised past Djokovic 7-6, 6-3 last month to win the Cincinnati Masters.

With fans not promised to see these two collide many more times in their careers, Djokovic has the chance to tie Federer at 22 wins apiece in Queens, or the seasoned sage could pull further away from the sport's in-form star.
