Billy Winn to Colts: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction

Joe PantornoSep 11, 2015

The Cleveland Browns traded defensive tackle Billy Winn to the Indianapolis Colts on Friday for a conditional 2017 draft pick, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

On Sept. 12, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reported the pick is a seventh-round choice in the 2017 draft.

Per CBS Sports' Dane Brugler, the Browns made the move to clear space for running back Shaun Draughn, who impressed during the preseason. Brugler went on to note Cleveland decided to keep four tight ends on its roster, calling the transaction "puzzling."

It did not look like Winn was going to be receiving major playing time in Cleveland, as even he expressed his doubts on making the team last week, per Ulrich.

The Browns will move forward with some playmakers on their line, including veteran Randy Starks, who recorded four sacks or more in each of the past four years; Desmond Bryant, who had five sacks in 2014; and rookie Danny Shelton, whom the team selected 12th overall in this year's draft.

Winn will join Indianapolis to provide depth to a defensive line that is one of the team's weakest groups. To make matters worse, the Colts recently lost veteran Art Jones to an ankle injury. Now led by Kendall Langford, who joined the team from St. Louis, the team lacks experience.

Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star explained:

"

There's a second-year player with zero starts to his name (Zach Kerr); a rookie third-round pick (Henry Anderson); a rookie fifth-round pick (David Parry); a free agent signed two days ago after being cut (T.Y. McGill); and a rookie who last played for a team called the Brooklyn Bolts in the Fall Experimental Football League (Earl Okine).

"

Though Winn didn't record a single sack in 2014, his experience, albeit three years, could help the Colts. His arrival might not spell overwhelming success for the Colts defensive line, but a player who has a few years under his belt, and a few sacks as well, can't hurt.

And giving up nothing more than a seventh-round draft pick for him seems like a step in the right direction.
