Serena Williams vs Roberta Vinci: Twitter Reacts to 2015 US Open Semifinal Upset

Adam WellsSep 11, 2015

For the first time in 15 months, Serena Williams will not win at a major tennis tournament. The world's top-ranked player lost in three sets to Roberta Vinci in the U.S. Open semifinals.

The match started out the way most of Williams' matches did during her run of four straight Grand Slam titles, which started at last year's U.S. Open. She dominated Vinci 6-2 and seemed likely to cruise into the finals.

When Williams wins the first set of a major tournament at this stage, she doesn't usually lose, per ESPN Stats and Info:

Instead, Vinci showed tremendous fight in winning the final two sets 6-4, 6-4, thanks in part to 40 unforced errors by Williams.

To call this an upset is an understatement, as the odds for Williams entering this match were insane, per Campus Insiders:

Land-Grant Holy Land used a college football perspective to put the result in context, alluding to Michigan's historic loss to Appalachian State in 2007:

Vinci entered the U.S. Open unseeded and is currently ranked 43rd in the world. She's not the worst player Williams has ever lost to, but the Italian had never reached the finals of a Grand Slam event in 16 years as a professional.

Given that Vinci had the nerve to ruin Williams' quest for a calendar-year Grand Slam, Mike Oz of Yahoo Sports called on Williams' rumored boyfriend Drake to respond:

If there is any artist out there right now who can churn out a good diss track in short order, Drake comes out just ahead of Taylor Swift.

Dan Devine of Yahoo Sports decided to take the other side of the Drake-Meek Mill beef in the wake of Williams' defeat:

However, as noted by SportsPickle, Drake seems to be a bad-luck charm for teams and/or athletes trying to win titles:

About the only person who didn't seem upset by the outcome of the match was Vinci herself, though she did take time in the post-match interview to think of the American people, via Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times:

Some people are flat-out rude, changing narratives for their selfish gain instead of letting things happen the way they were supposed to.

Joking aside, Williams has had a fantastic season with just three total losses, as well as wins at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. She won four consecutive Grand Slam titles and could break Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles as soon as next season.

On this one day, Vinci happened to be the better player. It's testament to how well she played, as well as the difficulty of winning a Grand Slam tournament. That makes Williams' run of four consecutive Grand Slam titles look even more impressive in hindsight.

Williams will still go down as the best women's player in history—possibly the best singles player ever regardless of gender—when her career is done. She will be able to step back to appreciate what she's accomplished this year, while focusing on improving for the rest of 2015 and into next season.
