Mayweather has seen plenty of raised eyebrows come his way with the decision of taking on Berto. There were plenty of other options capable of contending for the welterweight crown including Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs).

On paper, it doesn't look close, as ESPN Stats & Info took a look at their side-by-side stats:

Choosing Berto, who also has recently recovered from a shoulder injury, has been a cop-out of sorts for Money, according to Nate Scott of For the Win:

"

No one expects Mayweather to lose this fight. He will win, he will go 49-0, he’ll retire. In a year, he’ll come back for one last fight, to get to that nice round 50-0 number. We all already know what’s going to happen. Mayweather knows this, which is why he doesn’t sound like a fighter right now. He sounds like a used car salesman, trying to convince us how great a deal we’re all getting.

"

If this fight is anything like Mayweather's last fight against Manny Pacquiao, don't expect many fireworks. Mayweather seemed to avoid Pacquiao's advances at all costs, hugging him more than punching him.

But to the Ring's Michael Rosenthal, that kind of approach is just one of the aspects that make him a champion:

"

His many detractors might not like him or his safety-first fighting style but they have to acknowledge his remarkable gifts and the grueling work he has put in to get the most out of them over two dominating decades. He has earned his reputation as the best pure boxer of his time and one of the best ever.

"

Berto is going to have to be the aggressor, launching attacks at Mayweather as much as possible if he wants an opportunity to land a blow that could shake the boxing world. But it's hard to believe that Mayweather will put himself in a vulnerable position to sully his perfect record.

Prediction: Mayweather wins by unanimous decision 117-111, 118-112, 117-111.
