Five Things To Look For Against Eastern Michigan

Charles WelchSep 17, 2009

1) The energy level has got to stay up—Michigan's top two enemies this week are overconfidence and complacency. The Wolverines have got to come out focused like they did against Western Michigan and the second half last week, and they have to execute better on both sides of the ball than they have in the first two weeks. Now they may come out flat and still win by three touchdowns because let's face it this is probably the worst team they play so far. However, the attitude needs to be one of focus in order to make a statement, and also not get surprised. Northwestern let Eastern get back in it and Michigan has got to avoid doing the same.

2) Containment and getting off blocks—Michigan has got to continue to earn some style points, and they also have to work on defensive containment in order to prepare for the conference portion of their season. One thing that can be taken away from Notre Dame is Michigan could have some potential problems with larger offensive fronts. They got pushed around by Notre Dame's 315 pounds per man line. They have to use better technique, stay lower and use their quickness to get off blocks better. If they can improve on those items then they will be in a much better spot.

3) Ball hawking and gang tackling—Michigan has to get back to gang tackling. If every guy is pursuing with speed and intelligence, then Michigan is gonna bust some plays up and get into the backfield. Michigan also needs to force more turnovers. They made a big play last week in the third quarter with Steve Brown forcing a turnover, but it would be nice to see some aggressive packages and a few more interceptions.

4) The young guys will get some time—Denard Robinson will get more meaningful snaps at quarterback in this game, and will probably throw the ball a little more. He will also get another really big run showing off his speed again. This is another MAC defense that won't be able to account for his speed as well as Notre Dame. Robinson had a couple opportunities to make big plays against Notre Dame but the gaps closed a little more quickly. William Campbell and Justin Turner will get valuable time in this game as depth is necessity.

5) Tate Forcier will complete more than 70 percent of his throws—I don't how many times I've heard that Forcier is a freshman and that they are going to make mistakes. My answer is also that they generally get better with experience, and Tate is no different. This will be another excellent game for Forcier as he will have a completion percentage above 70 percent in this game and at least two touchdown passes with no interceptions. His pocket passing, arm strength, accuracy and speed are all improving each week and this week won't be any different.
