Federer, Wawrinka Advance to US Open 2015 Semifinals: Best Twitter Reactions

Ethan BaileySep 9, 2015

Wednesday night was not a good one for fans hoping for upsets in the 2015 U.S. Open Men's Singles Quarterfinals.

Roger Federer was nearly perfect as he cruised to victory against Richard Gasquet, and Stan Wawrinka dismantled Kevin Anderson on a day that rain delays forced both matches to be played simultaneously.

Federer has yet to lose a set in the tournament.

If you didn't know before watching Wednesday's match, you do now. Federer got off to a quick start he wouldn't look back from, posting seven aces through three service games.

To say his serves were on point might be an understatement, especially to this person:

Federer displayed command throughout the match and was able to fool Gasquet on a couple of nasty drop shots, including one from behind the baseline:

Gasquet was simply outmatched by one of the best tennis players in the world. He never seemed to find control over his shots, and that instability—combined with Federer's precision—led to an ugly defeat.

Gasquet's performance had his fans feeling like this:

While Federer had his fans feeling like this:

The dominant 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 victory by Federer is a U.S. Open performance tennis fans won't forget and a reminder that the 34-year-old can still play at an elite level.

It was also a reminder of what one-sided tennis can look like:

Meanwhile, Stan Wawrinka was putting on a clinic of his own.

Kevin Anderson had a hard time keeping up with Wawrinka's backhand shots throughout the match. Some would even call Wawrinka's backhand one of the best in the business:

The irony. At least we don't have to wait long to put that statement to the ultimate test.

Wawrinka won the first two sets 6-4 and absolutely dominated in the third—Anderson failed to win a single game as Wawrinka won the match's final set 6-0.

Against Federer, Wawrinka will need to keep the momentum from tonight's win going. While both players looked stellar in the quarterfinals, Federer was smooth, precise and in control from the very beginning.

Wawrinka recovered from a slow start against Anderson, but what counts is the way a player finishes. And he finished strong. Both players' arsenals feature wicked backhand shots, which should make for higher-intensity matches than what we saw today.

Switzerland will be well-represented in the next round of the U.S. Open, and you won't hear any complaints about that from the legendary Federer:

The Swiss backhand battle of 2015 is nearly upon us. Who will you be rooting for?
