The Dudley Boyz' Pursuit of Tag Titles Must Continue Beyond Night of Champions

Aaron BowerSep 9, 2015

As far as highlights of the year go in WWE, the unexpected return of The Dudley Boyz on Raw last month has to rank as one of the better moments of 2015 to date.

Bubba Ray and D-Von have taken to WWE like a duck to water once again, and they've quickly asserted themselves as front-runners for the WWE Tag Team Championships while looking pretty handy inside the ring in the process.

And although they have a match scheduled at Night of Champions with whomever wins the Prime Time Players' mandatory rematch with The New Day on Raw next week, their pursuit of an unprecedented 10th tag championship reign in WWE should be extended beyond the forthcoming pay-per-view, and there are several key reasons for that.

It was interesting to note during one of their first interviews back in WWE that Bubba Ray spelled out how the Dudleys have won the tag title nine times, and their main reason for coming back to the company was to go after that victory, which takes their number of reigns into double figures.

That's a nice dynamic to their return, and it does add an element of interest to their story while also setting a goal that fans can track over the coming months.

So to have them achieve that within a month or two of returning makes little sense. What would be great is for WWE to play this out over a number of months, and even have their quest culminate in success at one of the company's biggest pay-per-view shows.

Setbacks and losses are all part of professional wrestling, and while The Dudley Boyz are yet to lose a single one of their five matches since coming back to WWE, per ProFightDB.com, that run obviously has to come to an end at some point.

So why not Night of Champions? Have the brothers get so close to winning, and then play up the storyline that they're desperate to do what no other team has done, go into double figures with their tag title reigns.

We need to see some genuine depth in the storyline if it is to pay off, so have The New Day pick up a controversial win at Night of Champions (presuming they beat The PTPs on Raw). That would only add further to the support The Dudley Boyz will get from WWE fans on a weekly basis, and keep their momentum and interest high as we move toward the latter part of the year.

Get Bubba Ray on WWE's YouTube channel, on backstage segments on Raw and SmackDown and even in the ring openly declaring how they're desperate to do what nobody has done before. If they're handed the win at Night of Champions, it won't have nearly the same effect as if WWE were to extend their wait, make them lose a few times and start to question if they're ever going to do it.

And on top of that, the return of The Dudley Boyz doesn't automatically mean they should get the titles straight away. That would be incredibly harsh on The New Day.

Their first reign as tag champs was ended pretty quickly by The Prime Time Players, but since then, they've grown into one of the most entertaining and ultimately popular stables WWE possesses. They're massively over with their witty promos and their entertaining bouts, so let's leave the belts on them for a while.

For once, the tag division has genuine depth, potential for multiple storylines and an opportunity do something really special. The Dudley Boyz will inevitably play a big part of that, but they should have to wait to create history.

If they do, it will be perfect for all parties involved.
