With the quarterfinals halfway through at the 2015 U.S. Open, the cream is rising to the top, and all that's left are star-studded matchups with immense implications.

The defending champion is still alive on either side of the draw, after ninth-seeded Marin Cilic survived Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in five sets and Serena Williams ousted older sister Venus Williams throughout Tuesday's play. As Serena Williams stands two matches away from the calendar Grand Slam, she'll find out Wednesday if two top-five seeds will remain opposite her on the draw.

That's only the start of four scintillating matches on tap for Wednesday. Let's break them down below.

Match to Watch: No. 2 Roger Federer vs. No. 12 Richard Gasquet

One year ago at Flushing Meadows, the scene was setting up for Roger Federer to have yet another crack at ending his major drought and adding elusive Grand Slam No. 18. Then, Marin Cilic surprised him in the semifinal with a dazzling display of power.

Frenchman Richard Gasquet has somewhat quietly posted a similarly daunting run through the U.S. Open this year, and if Federer isn't careful, the No. 12 seed could send him packing in similar fashion to last year.

Federer does have the career formidability over Gasquet, having beat him 14 of 16 occasions and recently topping him in the Davis Cup. But the same could be said of Federer against Cilic last year, as he was 5-0 against him before Cilic's straight-set upset.

The difference between past meetings and this one, Federer says, may be the improvement his opponent has made, as he told Rachel Cohen of The Associated Press via Yahoo Sports.

"I'm not sure if I've seen maybe Gasquet play as well as he has right now," Federer said. "I feel like this could be one of the tougher Gasquets I've played in previous years, so I expect it to be difficult."

Federer does also have to make for a first on Wednesday as Gasquet has never lost in this round, although this is just his fourth quarterfinal, per Matt Zemek of Bloguin:

With that said, John Isner was playing perhaps his best tennis in the round of 16 and Federer disposed of him in straight sets. The Swiss maestro is still at a level where there may be only a couple of players who can top him when he's at his best, and they don't include Gasquet.

What's more, Federer has had some trouble in Queens in getting to tiebreaks but has been perfect in winning them. He's 7-0 on tiebreakers this tournament, including one for each of his set victories over Isner.

Gasquet poses the most complete threat Federer has faced so far this tournament, but he's been peaking at a level where it shouldn't seriously threaten him.

Then again, we've seen this story before in the not-so-distant past.
