Liam's Map's trainer, Todd Pletcher, had a decent shot of seeing his horse take home the title going into the race, as he trained half of the eight horses in the field Saturday.

It was clear from the very start that Liam's Map was the horse to beat. TVG Network has the race's replay:

Out of the gates he quickly established a two-length lead on the inside. It wasn't an overly blistering pace, though. Liam's Map hit the half-mile mark in 47 seconds, and Bay of Plenty was gaining on him, looking as if he would be overtaken.

Well, the exact opposite happened.

Liam's Map turned on the afterburners at the top of the final stretch and re-opened a comfortable lead, winning by four lengths. Another of Pletcher's horses, Coach Inge, finished second.

The performance might have seen Liam's Map laying down the gauntlet toward American Pharoah. Both horses are expected to compete in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Andy Serling of the NYRA believes the Triple Crown winner is in for a tough race come the end of October:

Such a solid performance at the Woodward Stakes has certainly forced the horse-racing world to stop and take notice of Liam's Map. His owner, Vincent Viola, along with Pletcher, should be brimming with confidence moving forward because he has a serious contender on his hands.
