Cowboys Interested in Ponder

Monday, Sept. 21

In wake of Tony Romo's broken clavicle suffered against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, the Cowboys will work out Ponder, according to Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Ponder Contacted by Raiders

Monday, Sept. 14

Carr was unable to return after suffering a hand injury against the Cincinnati Bengals during the Raiders' regular-season opener on Sunday. Although X-rays were negative, per Scott Bair of CSNBayArea.com, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported "Ponder has been contacted by Raiders as Derek Carr was set to have MRI on hand."

However, Mortensen later reported the Raiders informed Ponder he won't be signed. Carr went on to start against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2.

The 27-year-old Florida State product signed on with the Raiders in March with an eye on earning the team's second-string job. He couldn't capitalize on the opportunity, though, as McGloin outplayed him during training camp and the preseason.

Eagles Could Be Landing Spot for Ponder

Saturday, Sept. 5

Rand Getlin of the NFL Network notes multiple sources told him the Philadelphia Eagles are interested in the fifth-year quarterback.

Ponder spent four years with the Minnesota Vikings, who selected him with the 12th overall pick in the 2011 draft. He never lived up to that high billing, however, posting a lackluster 75.9 quarterback rating in 38 games with the team.

Landing with the Eagles would be an intriguing option.

He's showcased enough mobility in the pocket to handle the team's up-tempo offense if called upon. And that's not out of the realm of possibility with injury-prone Sam Bradford as the starter and fellow first-round disappointment Mark Sanchez the only other quarterback on the roster.

Ponder isn't good enough to lead an offense for an entire season and expect high-end results. That said, he's a veteran capable of filling a lesser role on the roster and playing in a pinch. That's exactly what the Eagles would be asking from him.
