3 People Injured by Falling Bolt at Lucas Oil Stadium During Colts vs. Bengals

Joseph ZuckerSep 3, 2015

A bolt from the roof of Lucas Oil Stadium reportedly fell during Thursday night's preseason game between the Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals, injuring three fans.

Barney Levengood, executive director of the Capital Improvement Board of Managers, confirmed the incident occurred as the retractable roof was opening before the beginning of the second half, per the Associated Press. Two of the fans were taken to a local hospital with "non-life threatening" injuries.

"A bolt from the fixed structure sheared and dropped into seating section 248," said Levengood in a statement. "The movement of the roof was stopped immediately and stadium authorities were notified."

Cory Ping, a fan who was in attendance at the game, tweeted that he heard what "sounded like 3 loud pops" and that his brother then saw an object falling from the roof.

WISH-TV posted a photo of the immediate aftermath as medical personnel tended to the three fans:

This isn't the first case of fan injury inside Lucas Oil Stadium. In September 2013, two fans fell from section 148 down to field level after a railing they were leaning on gave way. Coincidentally, that is the same corner of the venue in which the bolt fell Thursday.
