US Open Tennis 2015: Predictions, Live Stream for Thursday Night's Bracket

Steve SilvermanSep 3, 2015

Roger Federer has been playing spectacular tennis since losing the Wimbledon final to Novak Djokovic in early July.

Federer has been playing with speed, precision and power, but what has set his game apart in recent weeks has been his proficiency while serving.

Federer won the Western and Southern Open in August without losing a single game on his serve. He maintained that relentless pace while winning his first-round match at the U.S. Open.

Federer will take to the court for his second-round match at Arthur Ashe Stadium Thursday night against unseeded Steve Darcis of Belgium at 7 p.m. ET. After that match is completed, Caroline Wozniacki will face Petra Cetkovska at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Federer is the No. 2 seed behind Novak Djokovic, and he clearly has designs on playing his rival in the championship once again. However, if that is going to happen, Federer needs to continue his consistency.

Whether he can continue to sweep through every game on his serve is unclear, but even if he loses the odd game while serving, he can make up for that with his devastating return game.

The 34-year-old Swiss superstar disposed of Leonardo Mayer 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in his first-round match. Federer has a 29-6 match record in 2015, and he has won three tournaments.

Darcis, 31, is the 66th-ranked player in the world, and he got to the second round after beating Marcos Baghdatis 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, 3-1 (retired) in the first round.

Darcis has struggled to gain momentum much of the year, and he has an 8-9 match record in 2015. That is not a good sign when facing a player as sharp as Federer. The No. 2 seed has a way of jumping on mistakes and putting them away, taking much of the competitive fire out of his opponents.

Wozniacki would love to go deep in the U.S. Open, just as she did last year when she lost in the final to Serena Williams. Wozniacki also finished as the runner-up in 2008 at the U.S. Open, and those are her two best finishes in Grand Slam events.

Wozniacki rolled to an easy victory in her first-round match, as she dispatched American Jamie Loeb 6-2, 6-0.

Cetkovska has never been past the second round in any of her previous efforts at the U.S. Open. She defeated American Christina McHale in thee hard-fought sets to get past the first round for the second consecutive year.

Twelfth-seeded Richard Gasquet of France will take on Robin Haase of the Netherlands in the final singles match scheduled for Court Five.

Gasquet has had a very interesting season, having won two singles titles with a 20-7 match record in 2015. Gasquet defeated injured Thanasi Kokkinakis in five sets (4-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, 2-0, retired) to get to the second round.

Haase is the 79th-ranked player in the world and has struggled with a 5-12 record in 2015. He may find it very difficult to get anything going against Gasquet.
