Sports Feuds That Make Us Cringe

Nick DimengoSep 3, 2015

You know, sports feuds can be fun for fans to keep up with, but at some point they just get to be a little bit too much to handle.

Whether it's a couple of athletes squaring off on social media and engaging in a war of words on Twitter, or an owner and a former player taking aim at one another, sports beefs are only good when they're short and sweet.

However, some have been either dragged out or are just dumb from the start, making us cringe anytime they are mentioned.

This is in honor of those select few, because not all sports feuds are entertaining after awhile.

About 95 Percent of MLB Feuds

1 of 10

I'm sorry, but it will take a lot to convince me that any fight in MLB actually means anything more than a few bad words and some shoves from both teams.

That's not to say there aren't rivalries or bad blood between teams, but let's be honest, a baseball player is very rarely going to swing at an opponent and actually land a punch.

If beef between teams were 100 percent real, the pitcher would be hurling 100-mph heaters up and in on batters more frequently than they actually do, which makes bench-clearing fights nothing more than a little pent-up frustration.

Oh, and when things get taken to social media afterward, it's even more laughable.

Mark Cuban vs. Chris Broussard

2 of 10

This is actually one of two tired beefs that involve Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and someone in the sports world. However, the feud between Cubes and ESPN reporter Chris Broussard was just boring.

After being spurned by center DeAndre Jordan this offseason—who reupped with the Los Angeles Clippers in free agency, reneging on his verbal agreement with the Mavs—Cuban got word of a report from Broussard that stated the billionaire was doing anything he could to get ahold of Jordan to sway his decision back in Dallas' favor.

Going back and forth a few times on Twitter, Cuban even challenged the writer to provide his sources, offering to donate $100,000 to a charity of Broussard's choice upon presentation.

That's when Broussard reneged himself, posting a tweet out about the whole thing and issuing a formal apology.

If you're yawning by now, you're not alone, because this is just boring and unnecessary from two guys who seem like they were too proud to put their egos aside.

LeSean McCoy vs. Chip Kelly

3 of 10

It was such a vague accusation to begin with, but when former Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy (now with the Buffalo Bills) said his former head coach, Chip Kelly, was a racist, it opened up a delicate can of worms.

After trading McCoy to Buffalo to help upgrade his defense and save the Eagles cash, McCoy lived up to his nickname of Shady, tossing Kelly under the bus by saying that the coach "got rid of all the good black players,"  according to Deadspin's Tom Ley.

That's a bold statement, LeSean. Would you like to defend your opinion in a little bit more detail? Oh, no? That's weird.

After the running back refused to elaborate on his thoughts, any mention of this feud became stale, making it a tired subject that seems as if the player was just pissed off with how he was traded and that he doesn't respect his former coach.

Not only a delicate topic, but the way it was handled by McCoy makes this cringe-worthy.

Draymond Green vs. Hassan Whiteside

4 of 10

Maybe it's just me, but Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green sure does appear to have a little bit more bounce in his step since winning a ring last season, doesn't he?

Never one to stay quiet, Green openly bashed Cleveland Cavaliers fans following the Dubs' victory over the Cavs in the NBA Finals, and he continued to run his mouth about whatever popped into his head this offseason.

One of those topics was how the NBA big man has become a bit of an extinct animal, with teams looking to play small ball over having a large man take up space in the middle.

Green voiced that opinion on Twitter, with Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside taking note as the two exchanged jabs back and forth in what might seriously be the most ridiculous beef in basketball over the past few years.

Save this topic for guys like Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless, not professional basketball players who have nothing better to do during the offseason.

Antonio Cromartie vs. Kellen Winslow Jr.

5 of 10

Once teammates on the New York Jets, Antonio Cromartie and Kellen Winslow Jr. have built quite the hatred for each other as they were stirring it up in a full-blown Twitter feud earlier this summer.

After Winslow defended the notion that Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman was the best corner in the league—which Cromartie stated he didn't believe—the current Jets defender fired back a snarky reply to his teammate from once upon a time.

When Winslow saw the reply, he took things personally, calling out Cromartie for not remembering his kids names during a clip from the HBO show Hard Knocks back in 2010.

This beef was pretty solid in that it had a lot of different elements to it. But let's face it, it wasn't exactly the most brilliant topic to be arguing about.

DeAndre Jordan vs. the Dallas Mavericks

6 of 10

The second of the two major sports feuds that Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has been involved in recently, the beef with DeAndre Jordan after the center reupped with the Los Angeles Clippers in free agency is very real—but it's a tired narrative that will be talked about all season long.

After getting a verbal commitment from Jordan to sign with the Mavs, Clips players and coaches literally locked the up-and-coming superstar in his house the night before players were able to sign contracts, and eventually convinced him to stay in L.A.

Cubes was so irate over the decision that he and Mavs player Chandler Parsons ridiculed Jordan, with Cuban even jokingly erasing the player's name from his memory.

Players come and go from teams all the time, and while it sucks when something like this happens, it's not like these guys all actually hate one another, so let's just forget about it and move on.

I mean, Jordan is a good player, but is he really worth all of this drama? I think not.

Lil B vs. James Harden

7 of 10

The beef between Houston Rockets superstar James Harden and Bay Area rapper Lil B stems from one thing—a celebration.

That's right. Harden, who is frequently seen stirring an imaginary bowl after hitting big shots, apparently stole the "cooking dance" move from Lil B without permission.

Rather than joke about it and move on with their lives, though, Lil B put a curse on Harden—who had 13 turnovers in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals—with the baller then claiming he had no clue who Lil B even was to begin with.

This, my friends, is what you call a waste of time.

Roger Goodell vs. NFL Players

8 of 10

At some point, this feud has to end, right?

Look, no disrespect to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell—who has done a lot of good in his nine seasons as the most powerful man in sports—but, unfortunately, his mishandling of cases involving Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson in 2014 brought a hell of a lot of negative attention to himself.

After losing his battle in the Deflategate case with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Goodell vs. the NFLPA has become an even bigger feud, with former and current players trashing the guy through Twitter. The Players Association even went to town on dissing the guy.

With former players referring to Goodell as "the devil," everyone around the sport is hoping this is the end of the line for Goodell's reign at the top of the league.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Ronda Rousey

9 of 10

Go ahead and stand up if you're sick and tired of hearing something new each day about the feud between undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. and UFC fighter Ronda Rousey.

OK, now that you're all out of your seats to prove how ridiculous this topic is, go ahead and sit down to read why we all cringe each time it gets brought up.

After some dissing back and forth between the two, with Rousey throwing the first hook on national TV during the ESPY awards in July, Mayweather responded with his own shot toward "Rowdy" Rousey, telling her to call him when she makes $300 million.

Taking exception to the words, she fired back in an interview with TMZ Sports by saying that she probably makes more than he does per second in the ring, also throwing in a jab at the boxer's inability to read.

Nicknamed Money, you knew Mayweather wasn't just going to sit on that, right?

The boxer recently replied back, saying Rousey, according to TMZ Sports, "will never be at my status. Keep trying to get publicity."

It would be great to have the two settle this beef in the ring, but, unfortunately, I doubt it will ever happen.

J.J. Watt vs. Zach Mettenberger

10 of 10

If you would have told me 15 years ago that a sports beef between athletes would revolve around selfies, I would have looked at you like you were insane.

Low and behold, though, thanks to social media and other apps, that's what the beef between J.J. Watt and Zach Mettenberger is about.

After Mettenberger was named the starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans last season, he posted a pic on Twitter of his new haircut—which, apparently, he found to be important to share.

Even stranger, though, Watt took exception to the photo, mocking the QB after sacking him that very next game and saying, via the New York Post, that it was a "reminder that this isn't high school."

Things could have ended there between the two, but alas, this thing dragged out into this summer when Mettenberger saw a three-year-old photo of Watt in a letterman jacket that he needed to point out.

Watt downplayed the whole thing, taking to Twitter by saying, "a lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of a sheep," but one can only imagine what might happen if Mettenberger takes any snaps against the Houston Texans this year.

Get your cameras ready.
