Javier Tebas, LFP President, Comments on David De Gea Transfer Saga

Rob BlanchetteSep 2, 2015

Professional Football League president Javier Tebas has proclaimed Real Madrid "didn't ask for special treatment," when they realised they had made a grave error in the completion of David De Gea's transfer from Manchester United

The LFP boss said he has spoken candidly with Los Blancos over the matter, and that the Spanish giants understood they cannot amend the rules to favour their position, per Juan Jimenez and Alfredo Matilla of AS:

"

As far as the LFP is concerned there is no David de Gea case because the player has not been registered for the competition and the necessary documentation was not presented in the stipulated time. I had a conversation with Real Madrid, they rang me on Monday night. They gave me their explanations but in the knowledge that the deadline had been missed. They know how it works. I didn't feel any pressure. Madrid explained their situation after midnight. I understood their position and that of the player but there was nothing I could do. They didn't call to ask for any kind of special treatment because Madrid understand the rules.

De Gea's move back to his hometown was dramatically scuppered as Los Blancos failed to register the goalkeeper before the end of the Spanish transfer window.

The deal was also expected to see Keylor Navas swap the Bernabeu for Old Trafford, but it now appears the player will be Real coach Rafael Benitez's first choice for the upcoming campaign.

De Gea won United's Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season—after Louis van Gaal took the reigns from the departed David Moyes—playing 37 games in the Premier League as the Red Devils finished fourth, per WhoScored.com.

Football writer Jonas Giaever believes De Gea will now sign a new deal with LvG but will eventually find his way home to Madrid:

The collapse is one of the biggest farces in transfer deadline day history, with all parties guilty of complicating the deal, which could have been completed weeks ago.

Navas would have been an acceptable replacement for DDG at United, allowing the Spaniard to trigger his dream move, but Madrid dragged their heels at the wrong time.

De Gea is likely to become a Galactico in January or next summer, but there is every chance he might be turned off by Real president Florentino Perez's business approach, forcing Real to stick with Navas or look elsewhere for a world-class stopper.
