US Open Tennis 2015 Results: Scores, Highlights, Reaction from Tuesday Night

Brian MaziqueSep 2, 2015

No. 2-seed Simona Halep advanced to the second round of the 2015 U.S. Open with little to no resistance from Marina Erakovic. Halep prevailed 6-2, 3-0 as Erakovic retired with an apparent injury in the second set.

Erakovic showed almost no signs of being able to trouble Halep at any point in the match. Even if she were healthy, chances are Erakovic would have been dispatched swiftly. Halep broke her hobbled opponent four of the six times she had an opportunity to take the advantage, and she also won 87 percent of her first-service points. Halep will face Kateryna Bondarenko in the second round.

Bondarenko crushed Yutin Putintseva 6-0, 6-3. While Halep cruised, it was a bumpy ride for two seeded women's players.

No. 6 Lucie Safarova wasn't just upset on Tuesday, she was routed by the unseeded Lesya Tsurenko 6-4, 6-1. U.S. Open on Twitter has the final point:

It's fitting that the final point came on an unforced error from Safarova. She made 33 of them during the match overall. Tsurenko will take on the unseeded Varvara Lepchenko in the second round. Lepchenko dominated Kirsten Flipkens 6-1, 6-1 on Tuesday.

No. 14 Timea Bacsinzsky was also bitten by the upset bug. She fell to Barbora Strycova 7-5, 6-0. After a hard-fought first set, it seemed Bacsinzsky's confidence waned and she became a train wreck in the second set.

She won just 20 percent of his first serves in the second set, and that was the key to her defeat.

Most of the high seeds in the men's draw stayed away from upsets. The exception was No. 11 Gilles Simon's defeat at the hands of unseeded Donald Young. Young seemed to get better with every set, as he won 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. He committed a whopping total of 70 unforced errors, but the number dwindled with each passing set.

Despite the errors, Young talked about being determined to stay aggressive:

In the fifth and deciding set, Young committed a match-low eight. Aljaz Bedene will be the next opponent for Young. Bedene's opponent Ernests Gulbis retired in the third set with the former leading (3-6, 6-4, 3-0).

No. 3 Andy Murray had some difficulty with the mercurial Nick Kyrgios, but ultimately prevailed 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Kyrgios expressive behavior, complaints, etc can be a distraction, but Murray held firm. When It was over Murray talked about keeping his composure, per Howard Fendrich of the Associated Press.

On Wednesday, the higher seeds will attempt to avoid more upsets. That includes both top seeds. Novak Djokovic faces Andreas Haider-Maurer, and Serena Williams takes on Kiki Bertens.

Be on the lookout for more coverage of the 2015 U.S. Open on Bleacher Report through the conclusion of the event on September 13.
