Chelsea Transfer News: Latest Paul Pogba, Papy Djilobodji, Axel Witsel Rumours

Tom SunderlandSep 1, 2015

Chelsea may strike late to seal a trio of summer signings on Tuesday following reports that Paul Pogba, Axel Witsel and Papy Djilobodji are all interesting the Blues.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport suggested Juventus' capture of Inter midfielder Hernanes could spark the Turin giants into selling Pogba, per Charles Perrin of the Daily Express.

Milanese journalist Tancredi Palmeri insisted last week that Chelsea weren't giving up on Pogba's potential signing and were prepared to improve on a €120 million (£88 million) offer:

The France talisman isn't the only engine-room figure being hunted by the Blues, though, as Perrin cited talkSPORT, which provided a statement from Zenit St. Petersburg regarding midfield star Witsel: "We have repeatedly said that he has a release clause and it is worth €100m (£70m)."

Milan were reportedly interested in a move for Witsel, but his astronomical fee is believed to have put the Rossoneri off in their pursuit. Per Goal's Sacha Pisani, club vice-president Adriano Galliani said: "We tried to the end for Witsel, but we knew it would finish this way."

According to Sky Italy, Jurgen Klopp's potential appointment at the Zenit helm may also come to influence their willingness to sell key figure Witsel, per Football Italia:

That £70 million fee wouldn't be considered outside Chelsea's means, but the west Londoners will make a much more cost-effective capture with the signing of £3 million Djilobodji.

That's according to the Daily Star's David Woods, who claims Djilobodji is ready to have his Chelsea medical before completing the move from Ligue 1 side Nantes.

Sky Sports provided a glance at Djilobodji and why Chelsea are interested in a move for the 26-year-old, who has entered the final year of his contract in western France:

Woods mentioned the deal appears to bring an end to any prospect Chelsea may have had in signing Everton's John Stones, with back-up needed for the likes of John Terry and Gary Cahill.

Djilobodji was a key member for Nantes last season as the club finished 14th in Ligue 1 and conceded just 40 goals, the fewest number leaked by any team in the bottom half of the French top flight.

WhoScored.com outlined the centre-back-cum-defensive midfielder as a particularly strong figure when it comes to clearing his lines:

The hours may be winding down until the summer transfer window crashes to a close, but Chelsea appear to be one of those teams desperate to seal some business prior to the 6 p.m. BST deadline.

Midfield targets Pogba and Witsel will be considered complicated, expensive deals to pull off at such a late hour, but the Blues are just about as capable as any other outfit when it comes to managing the implausible.
