Recap
Shelby Rogers was one of the standouts in the final round of qualifying, beating Alla Kudryavtseva in three sets after dropping the first set 6-1. The local favourite struggled early but started to put more pressure on her opponent in the second set, taking full advantage of Kudryavtseva's many mistakes.
The final game of the match perfectly illustrated Rogers' resolve and Kudryavtseva's struggles. Up 40-0, the Russian challenger started messing around, gifting her opponent the win with an error on her forehand.
Afterward, Rogers took to Twitter to thank the fans in attendance for helping her pull through:
She'll meet compatriot Sachia Vickery in the first round.
As shared by tennis writer Chris Goldsmith, the number of young talents who came through this year's qualifying rounds is impressive:
Alexander Zverev in particular has been playing some fantastic tennis of late, culminating in a straight-sets win over 30-year-old Ivan Dodig on Friday.
The tall German, who has been steadily rising on the ATP ranking, used his serve to devastating effect to put pressure on Dodig early and often. Fans may remember the 6'6" Zverev for his strong showing against Borna Coric in Cincinnati, where he took the second set, and the 18-year-old could turn a few heads at Flushing Meadows.
Tennis blogger Ricky Dimon even believes he could make it all the way to Round 3, which would mean a likely meeting with Roger Federer:
Laura Siegemund progressed to the main draw after France's Alize Lim was forced to retire in the second set of their clash, but her tournament is likely to be a short one―she'll be facing Petra Kvitova in the first round.
The 25-year-old is coming off a big win in New Haven and is widely expected to do well at the U.S. Open. With the draw going in her favour, Kvitova will undoubtedly be one to watch, as shared by the New York Times' Ben Rothenberg:
Tereza Mrdeza and Yaroslava Shvedova served up one of the best matches of the entire qualifying series, with the former needing two tiebreaks to battle her way to the main draw in three sets. Shvedova failed to convert three match points before suffering heartbreak in the final set, but the crowd in attendance gave the 27-year-old a standing ovation nonetheless.
Mrdeza has now survived two tough rounds of qualifying, first against Raveena Kingsley and then against Shvedova, so expect her to put up a good fight against Evgeniya Rodina in Round 1.
