Let Sleeping Dogs Lie: Vick's Time Has Been Served

S. Wentworth DuncansonSep 16, 2009

When I first heard of Michael Vick's arrest for dog fighting I was disgusted, disappointed, and appalled. To begin with, there aren't many good black quarterbacks in the league. He had loads of potential and promise that he never even touched upon. Yet, he still was a player who was redefining and revolutionizing the quarterback position.

To hear he would do such a cruel and hurtful thing was ridiculous. The guy was rich beyond belief, yet ran a dogfighting ring. Where people would place thousand dollar bets on the fights. I guess Vick's $130 million wasn't enough.

As a dog lover, it sickened me to hear of someone torturing and executing dogs. Especially for someone so rich and famous. Its inexcusable. When he received his sentence, I thought it was a little excessive. Then again he deserved it just based on his stupidity and ignorance.

Upon his release, I wished him well, because he was one of the most entertaining NFL players I have ever seen. However not everyone shares my sentiment.

When the Philadelphia Eagles signed Vick, I applauded them for having the guts to take on Vick. I felt it is ridiculous that there are people and groups who want to boycott and protest the team. I feel he has paid more than enough.

To begin with, Vick served almost a year and a half in prison. He lost two years out of the prime of his career. A time where he is physically at his best. He lost his contracts, his endorsements, some of his fans, and a lot more. Not saying that he didnt deserve to lose those things, but enough is enough. He did his time for his crime.

What specifically offends me is why Vick? There have been players that have beat their wives. Drove drunk. Sold and used drugs. Some even killed people. Yet, the public forgives that.

We are talking about dogs here.

Donte Stallworth killed a person while driving drunk. As did Jim Leyritz. Even Pacman Jones, who I think is probably the worst behaved athlete in all sports is given second chances. No protests for him and he has never had to do time. To think Stallworth served 24 days for killing a human while drunk.

Are dogs more respected and revered than people? Since when.

The guy should be able to resume his career without people throwing his past in his face. He served his time and paid the price. There are far worse athletes to be protesting than Vick. Now, if he does something stupid like that again, then he gets no sympathy. However, he should be allowed to pick up whats left of his life and fix it.

Let the past go, and judge Michael Vick for the player and person he is with the Philadelphia Eagles
