Jets vs. Giants: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2015 Preseason

Joe PantornoAug 29, 2015

In a preseason battle for New York, well technically New Jersey, the Jets took full advantage of Giants miscues, defeating their Metlife Stadium roommates in a 28-18 victory on Saturday night.

The Jets recorded 14 points from their defense and special teams, while Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a pair of touchdown passes, going 9-of-14 for 127 yards in the win.

Fitzpatrick looked to key on the Giants' depleted secondary that had already lost Mykkele Thompson, Nat Berhe, Justin Currie and Bennett Jackson this preseason, throwing a pair of deep balls to start the game to state his intentions early, though none connected. But he soon would be able to pick it apart.

Gang Green's second drive of the game provided the night's first points, with Fitzpatrick throwing an 18-yard touchdown strike to Eric Decker. The Jets' new quarterback's nice start had Fox Sports radio host Jason Smith jokingly having images of grandeur:

He and Decker were working well all night, hooking up three times for 52 yards, as they continue to build their familiarity before the regular season starts.

While the Jets were eating up yards in big chunks, the Giants went back to the strategy that made them so successful during their Super Bowl runs. With methodical drives using power football, Manning was dealing, spreading his West Coast offense nicely on a 14-play, 85-yard drive that ate up 8:09 of the clock, ending with Rashad Jennings' one-yard touchdown run.

For NJ Advance Media's Jordan Raanan, that was the kind of Giants football that he is used to:

The Giants defense, however, was not looking as impressive. The Jets provided an easy answer to Jennings' touchdown when a Fitzpatrick screen pass to Zac Stacy was given little resistance, going 24 yards untouched for the go-ahead score.

Asbury Park Press' Joshua Newman tried to be kind in describing the Giants' new porous look:

Manning ended his evening on a very sour note as his pass was picked off by Antonio Cromartie and returned 59 yards for a touchdown with six seconds left in the first half. Looking to hit James Jones on a hook, Cromartie read the route perfectly, stepping right in front and stealing all the momentum going into the locker room.

The Record's Art Stapleton found it puzzling that Manning was even throwing the ball in that situation:

It would be Manning's last throw of the game as he finished 12-of-16 for 91 yards.

Special teams have plagued the Giants for years now, especially when it comes to punting. It hurt them again on Saturday.

Punting from their end zone, the Giants were unable to stop Walter Powell who fielded and returned Ryan Malone's boot for 54 yards, putting the Jets up 28-10.

The New York Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano knows the Giants' special teams woes all too well:

Not to be lost in the Giants lapses, Powell exuded great speed and agility in order to get to the end zone. Newsday's Kimberly A. Martin needed just two words to describe that return:

With the second- and third-stringers taking over in the second half, Ryan Nassib put together a nice day relieving Manning under center, going 11-18 for 122 yards. Leading a 10-play, 80-yard drive, he brought the Giants to within 10 after a six-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Cunningham and two-point conversion.

That was as close as the Giants would get, as the Jets took home the 'Snoopy Bowl' for city-wide bragging rights, but not for long. These in-stadium rivals will get a chance to play when it counts, facing off in the regular season for the first time in four years for a Week 13 clash. But if the preseason showed us anything Saturday night, it's that both teams have a lot of work to do before they can look ahead to that matchup.
