Harry Kane Says He'd Like to Play in the NFL After Retiring from Soccer

Tim DanielsAug 29, 2015

Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane said this week he wouldn't mind switching over to the American style of football when his playing career across the Atlantic comes to a close.

Sam Long of the Evening Standard passed along comments the rising star made about the possibility in an interview with Paul Jiggins of the Sun. The England international said the move is a long-term goal of his.

"It depends on how my football career goes, but when I am finished, I would love to go to the NFL and be a kicker," Kane said. "Even if I got to play just one game, it is something I would like to do.

"It's a long way off yet. But it is definitely something I have thought about."

Kane enjoyed a breakout campaign with Spurs last term, netting 31 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions. At 22, he's still got at least a decade before the end of his first football career even begins to appear on the horizon.

That said, he's already tested himself against American kickers during the NFL's visits to Europe, and he feels the skill set is there as long as he can become more reliable.

NFL UK passed along footage of Kane making a field goal:

"We've had NFL teams come to Spurs, and I can kick the ball as high and as far as them but not on a consistent basis, so I would need a bit of practice first," Kane said.

The striker also showed off his skills as a wideout, per NFL UK:

One player making the transition to American football has already garnered extra attention ahead of the upcoming NFL season. That's Jarryd Hayne, a former rugby player from Australia who's enjoying success this preseason with the San Francisco 49ers.

Tottenham are going to become a lot more involved with the American league once their new stadium opens in a couple years. The NFL announced in July it had agreed to a 10-year deal to play at least two games per season at the venue.

Kane certainly seems to have the leg for a job in the league, and plenty of kickers have played into their 40s. It would still be a difficult transition, especially considering he'd be competing for one of just 32 jobs against much more experienced players.

If nothing else, though, it would be fun to see Kane join a team for a preseason game just to watch him live out a dream.
