Roy Jones Jr. vs. Danny Santiago Fight Called off Due to Tropical Storm Erika

Alec NathanAug 28, 2015

For the second time in five years, a fight between Roy Jones Jr. and Danny Santiago has been cancelled.

According to FightNews.com, Jones and Santiago have postponed Saturday's bout on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten due to the anticipated effects of Tropical Storm Erika.

"They were worried about the hurricane, so the fight was postponed and they said it would be rescheduled at a later date," Santiago's manager Heidi Jasper said, per ESPN.com's Dan Rafael. "The promoter, Archie Keaton Entertainment, and I were supposed to get together to figure out when to reschedule the fight, but now it looks like Hurricane Erika might hit the island so we haven't been able to meet yet."

Rafael originally reported Wednesday that the bout was going to be called off.

Jones (62-8, 45 KOs) and Santiago (33-7-1, 19 KOs) were scheduled to trade blows in a 2010 showdown in Pensacola, Florida, but Jones suffered a hand injury that prevented the fight from taking place.

However, both sides appear determined to meet in the ring at some point down the line.

"...I have spoken to [Jones manager] McGee Wright, and he said Roy is as eager to fight Danny as much as Danny is to fight Roy, but we can't control the weather," Jasper said, according to Rafael.

The 46-year-old Jones may be aging, but he hasn't shied away from the ring. According to BoxRec.com, Jones rebounded from three straight losses from late 2009 to mid-2011 with eight straight wins. Most recently, Jones defeated Eric Watkins on Aug. 16 via sixth-round knockout. In fact, each of Jones' last five wins has come via KO or TKO.

Santiago, meanwhile, has lost three of his last five bouts, with a TKO defeat at the hands of Victor Emilio Ramirez representing his most recent breakdown, per BoxRec.

Jones and the 42-year-old Santiago are both well past their primes, but considering the fighters still have a burning desire to lace up the gloves, it wouldn't be a surprise to see them finally meet in the future.
