Jayhawks Being Overlooked

Jacob McCallisterSep 16, 2009

In the 09 College Football Season nobody is being overlooked more then the Kansas Jayhawks. No longer is KU just a place of basketball promiseland, football has made its nest, and it's not going anywhere. Coach Mangino has taken over a town whos fans anxiously await the next basketball season as soon as March is over, and given them the same anxiety in preperation for football. The fighting Mangino's are fresh off back to back bowl wins, including an Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech. Many pieces of those bowl teams are still in place this year looking to continue the winning ways. The Jayhawks return most noteably their undersized gunslinger Todd Ressing who needs some kinda heisman hello or some recognition and his favorite bullets Wr's Briscoe and Meier. Throw in a lighting bolt of a running back Jake Sharp and you have one potent offense. Not to mention Opurum the freshman wrecking ball who has been stellar backign Sharp.

The defense did take a hit in losing a stellar linebacking core, but they still have potential All American Stuckey back there looking to disrupt all that comes his way. With the D being a huge question mark I seen a 8-4 team playing this year, but after a convincing 2-0 start this season 10-2 is not a crazy thought. The D has brought more excitement to the Jayhawk nation, in two games Kansas has 9 sacks, for those who can't do math that's 4.5 sacks a game which is not too shabby. A big jolt to that stellar D is the emergence of senior DE Onyegbule. A converted linebacker who many Ku fans didn't even realize played til this season has been huge racking up Co-Big12 defensive player of the week for week 2. He is big and quick and finally playing to the potential Mangino seen in him originally. With Chris Harris looking comfortable back at corner with Patterson and Justin Springer looking solid at Nickel the Jayhawks are getting better each week. UTEP was supposed to have this unstoppable offense that KU would have to get into a shootout to squeak out a win, well folks saturday looked like a dominate team taking care of the ball on both sides, not one lacking any fight. No longer will KU be an offensive gem and a defensive dud. Time will tell with Big12 play lurking ahead, but judging by the first 2 games Kansas appears to be a serious threat week in and week out no matter who they line up against. So it amazes me how writers liek Staples from SI just sees these Jayhawks as a fringe top 25 team. Well it's going to take a victory against OU or Texas to open the eyes of those not watching this program blow up, most likely chance is against OU at home with a gimped up Bradford. KU will be in that one until the end, and Im not gonna promise a W but it could happen this year. Watch out college football the Rock Chalk Jayhawks are a legit football program thanks to the big man Mangino.
