15-Year-Old Bergen Catholic Freshman Josh McKenzie Lights Up Defender for TD

Thomas DuffyJun 1, 2018

Bergen Catholic freshman Josh McKenzie was the No. 1-ranked eighth-grade football player and wrestler in the nation last year.

During the team’s Thursday scrimmage, the 15-year-old running back helped verify that title.

After receiving a handoff, McKenzie lowered his shoulder and absolutely flattened a defender before crossing the goal line. The man who filmed the hit told Bleacher Report that the defender didn’t need immediate medical treatment but was clearly shaken up.

McKenzie galloped for a 30-yard score on his second carry of the game and then punched in the highlight TD a quarter later. He finished with 52 yards and two scores on five carries in the 47-0 win.

Here's another angle of the hit. Hashtag boom:

McKenzie is no ordinary phenom. According to NJ.com, his family has gone all-out in helping him become a truly elite athlete:

"

Josh's family has made countless sacrifices to fund his training and showcase him at national events. In the past year, Josh worked with 10 trainers and coaches, blending everything from power and explosive speed training to nutrition and mindset. He even has a family friend who serves as his personal "PR guy."

"

In another NJ.com video, those “financial sacrifices”—in the year 2014 alone—were north of $15,000.

Here’s more on McKenzie’s rise to athletic stardom:

"

For the past 10 years, McKenzie has followed an incredibly precise plan laid out by his uncle and legal guardian, Bill Green. In fact, Green is spending nearly every dollar of college money on Josh's athletic development and training. It's a daring all-in bet that has put Josh on track to cash in on a college scholarship.

"

It looks like it’s just the beginning for the Bergen Catholic monster. Keep an eye out for him.
