Manager Dick Advocaat has worked with Toivonen previously and told the club’s official website he was happy to get the midfielder on board: "I worked with Ola at PSV so I know him well. He is a national team player with a lot of experience, an attacking midfielder who can score goals and is good in the air—he will bring something different to the team."

Stylistically, Toivonen is quite a unique player. As you’d expect from an attacking midfielder, he can see a pass and is capable of bringing others into the game. But standing at 189 centimetres tall, the Swede will also pose a big aerial threat to opposition defences in open play and from set pieces.

Advocaat will be hoping the temporary capture of Toivonen will help jolt his toiling team into life. Sunderland have been second best in all three of their Premier League games so far this season, conceding eight goals in the process and picking up just one point.
