Browns Will Struggle to Replace Gipson if He Misses More Time
In his fourth season out of Wyoming, Gipson has emerged as one of the best safeties in football. He made 52 tackles and six interceptions in 2014 before a knee injury cut his season short at 11 games. It was the second straight campaign Gipson led the AFC in interceptions, leading to his first Pro Bowl berth.
The 2015 season has been fraught with frustrations on and off of the field. Gipson sat out OTAs during the offseason in hopes of landing a new contract before showing up for minicamp with a hamstring injury, per Cabot. He also suffered a muscle strain in camp that kept him off the field for a bit.
On the bright side, that's opened up an opportunity for Jordan Poyer to familiarize himself with the first-team defense. His conversion from cornerback allowed him to get more playing time in the preseason, though, as he remains a valuable special teams contributor.
Still, he'll struggle to replicate Gipson's effectiveness despite the experience he recently picked up. Pro Football Focus ranked Gipson as its fourth-best coverage safety in 2014 (h/t ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler), a ranking that may have been higher had he not missed time. The Browns will have their fingers crossed Gipson's not going to suffer another injury this season.
