Jacory Harris: The Man, the Myth, the Chalkboard Material Legend in the Making

Zachary OstermanSep 16, 2009

(Josh Nesbitt would do well not to follow Jacory Harris into this fire)

Some interesting talk coming out of south Florida these days.

First, a couple of days ago, Randy Shannon goes on record as saying his team shouldn't take Georgia Tech lightly, which is good advice, considering Georgia Tech haven't lost to Miami since Jacory Harris was a freshman in high school.

Then, today, the AJC gives us this little nugget from Harris himself:

"They have a good defense. Their secondary is good. Morgan Burnett gets across the whole field. And their defensive end [Derrick Morgan] is a beast. But at the same time, I don’t believe our offense can [be stopped]."

Now, confidence that bordered on arrogance has always been part of the mantra at the U—they hand it out with the crazy pants and the helmet with the thing.

And Miami did look awfully good on offense, albeit a bit sloppy, against Florida State, who lost partly because the 'Noles.

But Georgia Tech is a different beast than Florida State. The Jackets don't need to prove themselves, they have fewer question marks. Most importantly, they are a better team.

Early returns lead me to like Miami in this game, and oddsmakers would agree to the tune of five points, but they had better not, you know, take Georgia Tech "lightly."

Maybe I'm reading all of this wrong, but it feels an awful lot like Miami are treating this game like they're supposed to win, they've always been supposed to win, and as long as they don't screw around with those math geeks from Atlanta, they will win.

The Hurricanes are favored—good for them—but it takes a lot more than confidence and one nationally-televised win to get a victory out of a game like this. The stakes get higher and higher as the season goes on.

Randy Shannon had better get his troops ready for that, or Georgia Tech will get one for the thumb.
