Timothy RappAug 27, 2015

Fans of the New York Jets and New York Giants will learn a lot about their teams on Saturday night.

The third preseason game tends to be a team's final tuneup before the regular season begins, as star players and key veterans generally sit the final preseason contest while coaches make the final personnel decisions before cutting the roster down to 53 players.

That means when the Jets face the Giants, fans should get a long look at both teams' starters and get the most accurate idea yet of where these teams stand heading into the regular season. Let's break down all of the information you need heading into this intrastate showdown.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - AUGUST 21: Leonard Williams #62 of the New York Jets sacks T.J. Yates #13 of the Atlanta Falcons for a safety in the second quarter during their pre season game at MetLife Stadium on August 21, 2015 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The intriguing battle to watch in this game will be the Jets' swarming defense against Eli Manning, Odell Beckham Jr. and the Giants' solid passing attack.

The Jets overhauled their defense this offseason, signing corners Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie and drafting defensive tackle Leonard Williams, who is already making his presence felt.

"It's crazy, but he doesn't know how good he can be," Jets guard Willie Colon said of Williams, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. "He's just playing football. When he gets his bearings, he's going to be scary."

The Atlanta Falcons certainly have a good idea of how good Williams can be. He notched a safety, 1.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles in the Jets' last preseason game, perhaps making a few fans forget that starter Sheldon Richardson will miss the first four games of the regular season due to suspension.

Even without Richardson, the front three of Muhammad Wilkerson, Damon Harrison and Williams gives the Jets one of the nastiest lines in all of football.

Of course, the Jets aren't lacking for talent elsewhere on defense, namely in the secondary, where Revis is likely to shadow Beckham in the night's most intriguing individual matchup. Beckham is certainly excited to battle Revis, as he told Tom Rock of Newsday:

"

Why would you not want to go against the best in the league, the Patrick Petersons, the [Richard] Shermans, Revis, Joe Haden. That's what you come here to do is put yourself in the best position possible to go against the best and he's clearly one of the best. It should be a tough challenge but I'm looking forward to going out there to compete.

"

The Jets signed Revis to a lucrative deal to take out dynamic playmakers like Beckham. It should be a fun battle as the youngster tries to best the veteran.

Saturday's game will also give Jets fans another chance to see how Ryan Fitzpatrick is running the offense. The signal-caller, thrust into the starting role after Geno Smith broke his jaw, certainly has solid weapons to work with on the outside in Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker

Much of the Jets' season will come down to how Fitzpatrick plays early on. Pete Prisco of CBS Sports doesn't think that bodes well for the team:

Doug Farrar of Sports Illustrated isn't quite so hard on Fitzpatrick, however:

Jets fans are going to get a pretty good idea of what Fitzpatrick will offer this season on Saturday. The Jets have the other pieces in place to compete for a playoff berth this year, but so much will come down to the play of their quarterback.

If Fitzpatrick struggles on Saturday night, it could be a sign of things to come for the Jets this season.
