NFL Rumors: Latest Buzz Surrounding Rex Grossman, Jason Pierre-Paul

Joe PantornoAug 26, 2015

The closer it gets to Week 1 of the NFL regular season, the more glaring roster holes become to respective teams around the league.

There is the possibility of help, though, whether it is from within their own ranks or on the free-agent market as the transaction wire is sure to heat up toward the end of the preseason. Here is a look at some notable names that could be coming back to play in 2015.

Rex Grossman

Quarterback Rex Grossman has not appeared in an NFL game since 2011, when he started 13 games with the Washington Redskins. In fact, he didn't even have an NFL home in 2014 as the 35-year-old continued to look for work.

His wait might be over though, as ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure reports that Grossman was in Atlanta Tuesday for a workout and physical with the Falcons.

But it is unclear whether Grossman will be patrolling the sidelines in Atlanta, as head coach Dan Quinn told McClure:

"

I think, just like at every position, we're happy with the two guys we have, but when there's a time to come work out somebody and see where he's at or so where the player is at or how we can help improve, we're going to look at that every chance we get. Wouldn't look too much into that other than that's another opportunity for us to do that.

"

Atlanta did not release any news following Grossman's workout either, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's D. Orlando Ledbetter:

The Falcons are currently trying to figure out whether T.J. Yates or Sean Renfree will be backing up Matt Ryan in 2015. The two quarterbacks have combined for a total of 14 appearances in the NFL, with Yates providing all of them.

While Grossman has not been anything near a top quarterback during his time, he is a winner, possessing a 25-22 record as a starter that includes a trip to Super Bowl XLI with the Chicago Bears. That kind of experience and presence could prove helpful to a Falcons franchise that has won only a single playoff game in the past 10 years.

Jason Pierre-Paul

Things were starting to look up for New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. After a stellar sophomore campaign in which he recorded 16.5 sacks in 2011, he had just 8.5 over the next two seasons combined, including a 2013 that saw him miss five games.

But he came back strong in 2015 with 12.5 sacks while showing flashes of the dominant defensive lineman that wreaked havoc on opposing offensive lines.

Then came an unfortunate July 4 incident involving fireworks; the rest is history.

After the long and well-documented wait that saw Pierre-Paul run into issues with trainers and contract negotiations, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport has some insight on his return:

"

According to three sources informed of his recovery, JPP's rehab is "progressing very well."... He's still expected to show up at the Giants facility prior to the start of the regular season, but whether he'll be in uniform Week 1 against the Cowboys or whether it takes a few weeks to round into form is still up in the air.

"

There is a contract awaiting him upon his return, but Pierre-Paul has yet to sign it, as Rapoport explains:

"

JPP's $14.8 million franchise tender hasn't been rescinded by the team and it remains unsigned. As soon as he signs it, he'd be under contract and subject to being placed on a non-football injury list that could lead to him not being paid for the first six weeks of the season. It's among the reasons he hasn't signed his tag.

"

A healthy Pierre-Paul would be a sight for sore eyes in New York, as the Giants have been laded by injuries throughout the preseason. According to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, 17 of 90 Giants on the roster, 18.9 percent, are out with injury.

New York currently has second-year man Kerry Wynn as the starting left defensive end opposite Robert Ayers, who recorded five sacks in his first year with the Giants. The defensive line will look much more formidable when replacing Wynn with Pierre-Paul, though it seems unlikely that will happen by Week 1 of the regular season.
