Manchester United Transfer News: Thomas Muller Rumours Discussed by Philipp Lahm

Gianni VerschuerenAug 25, 2015

Bayern Munich star Philipp Lahm has weighed in on the persistent transfer rumours linking team-mate Thomas Muller with a move to Manchester United, telling Munchner Mekur (h/t Goal's Joe Wright) you cannot put a price on the forward.

According to Wright, citing reports in Germany, Muller has been the subject of an €85 million bid, but as Lahm said, Muller is so important to Bayern, no fee would suffice to pry him away:

"

Thomas is one of those role models who you can't attach a price-tag to. He lives for Bayern, he is a very, very important player for us.

There shouldn't be a concern about Bayern's identity. Look at the team: Thomas Muller, Holger Badstuber, David Alaba, me - all from the youth team.

We have Manuel Neuer, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, who have been here so long that their hearts practically beat red.

The 25-year-old world champion graduated from Bayern's youth setup and has been one of the team's most consistent performers for years, leading the Bavarians to Bundesliga title after title. Last year, he scored 13 goals and added 10 assists in the league, per WhoScored.com.

United's forwards have had a horrible start to the 2015-16 campaign, and as of right now, the squad has scored just a single goal on the domestic level―Kyle Walker gifted them the win against Tottenham Hotspur with an own goal.

Manager Louis van Gaal's squad is in dire need of some fresh blood, and with the end of the summer transfer window fast approaching, a number of world-class stars continue to be linked with a move. Bleacher Report's Stefan Bienkowski couldn't help but crack a joke at the persistent rumours:

Bayern remain adamant Muller is not for sale, however. The Germany international has already commented on the “crazy” transfer fees being thrown around in the press, while Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer insists Muller isn't going anywhere, per football writer Pete O'Rourke.

The Bavarians have already sold a fan favourite to the Mancunians in 2015, as Bastian Schweinsteiger left the only club he had ever played for as a professional for a new adventure.

Schweinsteiger's situation was quite different from Muller's, however. The 31-year-old started just 15 Bundesliga matches last year, per WhoScored.com, and he has been slowed down by injuries the last two seasons. He wasn't expected to be a vital starter in the 2015-16 campaign, and the Bavarians have already added a more dynamic replacement in the form of Arturo Vidal.

By contrast, Muller is a star performer just entering the prime of his career, and he figures to be a key component of manager Pep Guardiola's side for years to come. His ability to link the midfielders with star striker Robert Lewandowski is uncanny, and there's no one who could adequately replace the German in the near future.

Bayern have no need to sell Muller from a financial perspective, and fans at the Allianz Arena would riot if another favourite and homegrown star were sold to the very same team in the same transfer window.

None of this rules out a move for Muller, although it seems highly unlikely to happen anytime soon. Perhaps the forward will entertain the idea of embarking on a foreign adventure in a few years, when there's nothing left to accomplish in Germany, or perhaps he would love to spend his entire career at the same club and retire a legend.

Either way, a move in 2015 seems all but impossible.
