Tyler ConwayAug 24, 2015

Marvin Sharp, who won a USA Gymnastics 2010 Coach of the Year award, was arrested in Indianapolis early Monday morning on suspicion of child molestation.

According to online court records obtained by Justin L. Mack of the Indianapolis Star, police raided Sharp's home and gymnastics academy overnight in search of evidence. On Tuesday he was charged with four counts of child molestation and three counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, according to the Associated Press via ESPN.com. The report added:

"

Federal prosecutors who charged Sharp with knowing receipt of child pornography and knowing possession of child pornography said investigators found thousands of sexually explicit images of minors in locked safes in his Indianapolis home Saturday and more in a file cabinet at his business, Sharp's Gymnastics Academy.

Marion County Prosecutor's Office spokesperson Peg McLeish confirmed an investigation is underway. In the state of Indiana, child molestation covers unlawful sexual acts performed with persons under the age of 14. Depending on the nature of the charge, Sharp could face up to 40 years in prison.

Matt McCutcheon, Carrie Cline and Jeremy Brilliant of WTHR reported police removed evidence from Sharp's home and gym during the raid. They also reported there could be additional victims, adding the U.S. Attorney's Office is said to be reviewing the case.

USA Gymnastics released a statement following Sharp's arrest, via Brilliant:

Sharp, 48, is best known for coaching former Olympians Bridget Sloan and Samantha Peszek. Sloan and Peszek won a silver medal as part of the U.S. Olympic team in 2008. He was also the United States' head coach at the 2011 Pan Am Games, winning gold.
