Manziel Out vs. Steelers

Thursday, Dec. 31

Andrew Gribble of ClevelandBrowns.com reported the team's decision to keep Manziel out for the season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers, noting Austin Davis will get the start.

Manziel Injury Another Chapter in Tumultuous Season

Thus far, Manziel has failed to live up to the hype that accompanied him after his Texas A&M career. The 2015 campaign is already a lost cause for the 3-12 Browns, although any missed time from Manziel cuts into the evaluation process heading into an important offseason.

This injury is just the latest turn in a tumultuous season for Manziel.

Josh McCown was the original starter for the Browns this season, but he is out with a broken collarbone. Manziel filled in during the middle of the schedule, but Pat McManamon of ESPN.com noted the Browns benched the former Heisman Trophy winner after he lied to the coaching staff about videos that surfaced of him partying in Texas.

Cleveland had Manziel as its third-stringer during a loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 12 and behind Davis during a Week 13 blowout loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Following those defeats, the Browns announced Manziel as the starter heading into Week 14’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

In all, Manziel has appeared in nine games with 1,500 passing yards and seven touchdowns in 2015.

Cleveland likely still holds out hope the 23-year-old will be its quarterback of the future, especially since it used a first-round pick on him. Manziel starting in Weeks 14 through 16 provided the Browns with a valuable evaluation period, but him missing Week 17 will deprive Cleveland a chance of seeing him make any further strides in 2015.
