Daily Fantasy Football 2015: Rookie and Sleeper TEs to Target Early This Season

David KenyonAug 23, 2015

Can you hear it?

Yes, that's the sound of daily fantasy football returning to computers as the opening week of the 2015 NFL regular season rapidly approaches.

Although tight end isn't a glamorous position, a thrifty choice can pay dividends—quite literally—in your Week 1 DraftKings tournaments.

Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, Travis Kelce, Greg Olsen and Martellus Bennett will be the most popular choices to fill the position, but keep an eye on a rookie and a handful of sleepers.

Remember that unless you choose a big-name tight end, the key element that defines success is whether or not your selection reaches the end zone. The following players are entering favorable matchups for scoring touchdowns early in 2015.

Jordan Cameron, Miami Dolphins: $3,800

1 of 5

Following a concussion-riddled 2014 campaign, Jordan Cameron joined the Miami Dolphins on a two-year deal. He's only one season removed from an 80-catch, 917-yard, seven-touchdown performance.

Cameron is primed to make an immediate impact, especially if first-round draft pick DeVante Parker is eased back into action. Parker is on track to suit up in Week 1, but if he's limited in any fashion, Cameron will be the primary beneficiary of available targets.

Additionally, the Dolphins open the season against the Washington team, whose defense surrendered the third-most touchdowns to tight ends last season, per FF Toolbox.

Valued at only $3,800, Cameron is worth serious consideration for the initial nod in your lineup.

Maxx Williams, Baltimore Ravens: $2,700

2 of 5

The Baltimore Ravens open the 2015 season against the Denver Broncos, a strong defensive team. Led by Chris Harris, Aqib Talib and T.J. Ward, the Denver secondary isn't beaten through the air.

What that means, though, is that quarterback Joe Flacco needs non-receivers to step up against the linebackers, because Steve Smith Sr., Breshad Perriman and Kamar Aiken likely won't have many opportunities.

Enter Maxx Williams, Baltimore's second-round pick.

Crockett Gillmore is currently the team's starter, but he's more of a blocker than a pass-catcher. Consequently, when the Ravens are inevitably playing from behind on the road, Williams is the favorite to assume the No. 1 role.

Denver allowed the second-most receptions to tight ends in 2014, ceding nine touchdowns as well. Williams sits in excellent position to earn plenty of targets during his NFL debut.

Richard Rodgers, Green Bay Packers: $2,500

3 of 5

It was only a matter of time before Richard Rodgers jumped Andrew Quarless on the depth chart, and the second-year tight end is already turning heads.

According to ESPN.com's Rob Demovsky, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said he believes in the importance of "having big people" like Rodgers to attack the middle of the field.

"The quickest way to the end zone is through the middle of the field," McCarthy said. "That's always been a belief of mine, and it's really where you start with the vertical passing game. Richard is definitely one of those guys."

Tight ends caught 13 touchdowns against the Bears last season, and their moves focused more on the pass rush than pass coverage. Rodgers should have no problem finding space between the hashes and in the red zone.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: $3,400

The headlines are bound to read "Marcus Mariota vs. Jameis Winston: Battle of Rookie Quarterbacks."

But don't forget about Austin Seferian-Jenkins, a second-year tight end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and a soon-to-be favorite target of Winston's.

Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune notes Bucs head coach Lovie Smith is looking forward to regularly using the Washington product in 2015. Smith said:

"We've talked about Austin since he got here, what his potential will be. Every day he's on the field, he confirms that more. There's not a whole lot to dislike about Austin—we have big plans for him."

Seferian-Jenkins is the undisputed No. 1 on the depth chart, and his 6'5" frame gives Winston a terrific red-zone option. Tennessee allowing 11 touchdowns to tight ends in 2014 doesn't hurt, either.

Eric Ebron, Detroit Lions: $2,900

5 of 5

Eric Ebron is an intriguing option not only due to his combination of size and speed, but also because of his potential to rack up targets.

The North Carolina product can be split out wide as a stand-up receiver instead of aligning in the standard three-point stance. Detroit is then able to utilize a typical tight end such as Brandon Pettigrew on the line of scrimmage, allowing Ebron to present a mismatch in the slot.

According to ProFootballFocus, Ebron ran 52.3 percent of his routes from the slot last season. After building rapport with Matthew Stafford, the duo's efficiency numbers should noticeably improve in Ebron's second year.

He's not without risk, but Ebron is a rare low-salary tight end who can produce double-digit points without finding the end zone.
