Quenton Nelson to Have Surgery on Knee Injury, Latest News on Seahawks Star's Status After Trade
The Seattle Seahawks will have to wait at least another week to see newly-acquired guard Quenton Nelson play his second game for the franchise.
Nelson will be out Sunday against the visiting Arizona Cardinals after undergoing a "minor procedure" on his knee, head coach Mike Macdonald announced.
He is considered week-to-week but won't be placed on IR, according to Macdonald.
The news comes 10 days after the Seahawks gave up a 2027 third-round pick and 2028 fifth-rounder in order to acquire Nelson from the Indianapolis Colts.
Nelson was on the field for every Seahawks offensive snap while playing at left guard opposite Grey Zabel during the team's Monday loss to the visiting Chicago Bears.
Macdonald said Nelson had passed a physical after arriving in Seattle, but during Monday's game aggravated an issue stemming from his final contest with the Colts back on Oct. 25.
"In short, he had something he was dealing with when he got here," Macdonald said. "We re-imaged it, and it was aggravated to some degree. So we've done the due diligence, and everybody agrees that it's best to take care of it now and play the long game."
Macdonald said the team had discussed keeping Zabel at right guard after moving him there in the wake of Nelson's injury, but ultimately decided to slide Zabel to left while former starting right guard Anthony Bradford will return to his previous position.
The Seahawks are scheduled for a Week 11 bye. The decision not to place Nelson on IR indicates the team expects him back by at least the game after, when Seattle plays a road game against the San Francisco 49ers on Nov. 19.
Macdonald confirmed Friday Drew Lock, who has been dealing with an elbow injury, is on track to start in place of injured starter Sam Darnold.
Darnold and Nelson won't be the only injury absences for the Seahawks this weekend. Defensive tackle Leonard Williams, wide receiver Rashid Shaheed and linebacker Uchenna Nwosu will also be out for Saturday's game, according to Macdonald.
The Seahawks will look to adjust to those gaps in the lineup before kicking off Week 9 action Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
