Rob Cerfolio Named Cardinals GM amid MLB Free Agency, Will Report to Chaim Bloom

The front-office reshuffling for the St. Louis Cardinals continued on Friday with Rob Cerfolio taking over as general manager.

The Cardinals announced on Friday that Cerfolio is being promoted to general manager and he will report to president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom.

Cerfolio has been with the Cardinals since 2024 when he was hired as assistant general manager. The 34-year-old previously spent nine years in the Cleveland Guardians organization, including three seasons as director of player development.

The move to promote Cerfolio comes after the Cardinals lost longtime front-office executive Randy Flores when he was hired by the Houston Astros as their new general manager.

Flores had been the director of scouting in St. Louis since 2015. He added the title of assistant general manager in 2018.

The promotion of Cerfolio marks the first time the Cardinals will have someone with the general manager designation since Bloom took over as president of baseball operations after the 2025 season.

Bloom remains the lead executive for the organization. Cerfolio has been widely credited with leading the improvement in St. Louis' farm system in recent years, including the development of players like Jordan Walker, JJ Wetherholt and Joshua Báez.

The Cardinals boast a top-10 farm system even with their recent graduations thanks to players like Rainiel Rodriguez, Liam Doyle and Alexander Frias.

St. Louis has missed the playoffs in four consecutive seasons, the longest drought for the franchise since 1988 to '95. The 2026 marked the third time in four years the Cardinals have finished with a losing record.
