Washington is in need of help at the tight end position, with Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen out for the season. Its next option, Jordan Reed, has had a bevy of injury problems as well, missing 12 games in the past two seasons and is currently recovering from a hamstring issue.
Without the deal, the Redskins would have been moving forward with Je'Ron Hamm, Chase Dixon and Devin Mahina, three tight ends who have never seen NFL action. While Carrier hasn't shown he has the ability to be a starter at the NFL level to this point, he will add depth to a group laden with uncertainty.
It seems Carrier has his first real opportunity to earn regular playing time on the offensive side of the ball. Appearing in 11 games last year, Carrier recorded nine catches for 105 yards, the only receiving action he's seen in a three-year career. He has been a regular contributor to the special teams unit during his tenure in San Francisco, though a slew of 49ers tight ends led by Vernon Davis have kept Carrier on the sidelines for the vast majority of offensive snaps.
The Redskins were not the only team interested in Carrier, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport:
Carrier, who is 6'3", 238 pounds, has shown flashes as a blocker and pass-catcher and will provide Washington with another option as it looks to battle through the injuries it has sustained at the position.
