Padres MiLB Team Reveals Epic Taco-Themed Jerseys in New Photos, Video
The San Antonio Missions have a new alter ego. The Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres announced on Thursday that the San Antonio Breakfast Tacos would be the club's new alternate identity.
The minor league team's new identity also features new jerseys, which the Missions will wear when they make their debut as the Breakfast Tacos on April 16-18. The name and uniforms are part of a promotion that includes new merchandise and breakfast tacos, which will be served in the stadium during those three games.
"We wanted something fresh that celebrates the true colors and blended the culture of San Antonio, and what says San Antonio better than the food we love?" said Mickey Holt, the team's assistant general manager.
The Breakfast Tacos marks the team's second alternate identity. In 2018, they introduced the Flying Chanclas identity to honor the city's local Hispanic community. The Flying Chanclas identity is used by the team during every Thursday home game, and Holt told reporters that the team would be open to making the Breakfast Tacos a mainstay as well if the fans embrace it.
The Missions announced the promotion amid efforts to build a new stadium in downtown San Antonio. The team's local owners partnered with the city for a public financing partnership for a 7,500-seat stadium near San Pedro Creek that would be worth $160 million, according to the San Antonio Report. The stadium was initially set to open in 2028, but rising costs and capital concerns have delayed construction and pushed back the grand opening to 2029.
