Sam Darnold Injured, Latest News on QB's Status and Return Timeline Ahead of Seahawks vs. Cardinals

Julia StumbaughNov 4, 2026

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold will be sidelined with a quad injury for Sunday's matchup against the visiting Arizona Cardinals, head coach Mike Macdonald announced Wednesday.

Darnold is considered week-to-week but won't be placed on IR, according to Macdonald.

Darnold cracked a rib on the second play of Monday's loss to the Chicago Bears before suffering the quad injury late in the game, according to Macdonald.

Macdonald clarified it is the quad injury, not the cracked rib, keeping Darnold out of Week 9 action.

Drew Lock is dealing with an elbow injury but if available is slated to start with Jalen Milroe backing him up against the Cardinals, Macdonald said.

The Seahawks don't currently have any other quarterbacks on the roster. Macdonald didn't rule out the possibility of adding another signal caller ahead of Sunday's game.

Darnold has started seven games for the Seahawks this season, completing 60.2 percent of his passes with 1,478 yards and 10 touchdowns alongside nine interceptions.

Lock started in Weeks 2 and 3 after Darnold suffered a glute injury in his team's season opener. He most recently served as the Seahawks' emergency third quarterback against the Bears while Milroe backed up Darnold.

The Seahawks first listed Lock on the injury report as limited with a right forearm issue ahead of a Week 6 loss at the Denver Broncos.

Lock was listed as limited with a right elbow injury the following week before he was ruled out of a Week 7 win over the visiting Kansas City Chiefs.

Macdonald said after the Oct. 25 game the Seahawks didn't yet know the severity of Lock's injury but that it was "best for us right now to try to calm it down the best we can."

As of Wednesday, Macdonald said Lock was "able to throw" but that his capacity would be determined during practice this week.

Milroe has yet to see game action this season. He took just three snaps across three different contests during his rookie campaign with the Seahawks.

The Seahawks (4-4) are currently deadlocked with the Los Angeles Rams for second in the NFC West behind the San Francisco 49ers (6-1).

A win this week over the Cardinals (3-5) would increase the defending champions' playoff odds to 54 percent, while a loss would drop the team to 29 percent, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

How much participation Lock sees in practice this week could provide an early indication as to whether Milroe will be making his first NFL start in a crucial divisional matchup this weekend.
