Overview

Following their win in the first one-day international, captain AB de Villiers admitted the team was somewhat lacking in intensity. While Hashim Amla and Rilee Rossouw did a fine job with the bat, the rest of the batting order were a little under par.

Also lacking was South Africa’s prowess in the field. Various dropped catches meant New Zealand pushed the hosts closer than they would have liked. Still, Dale Steyn seemed to be back to finding some of his intensity, while Vernon Philander and Imran Tahir offered decent support. However, South Africa lacked the spark that has made them one of the best teams in the world.

Part of that might be down to the fact that this team is somewhat different to the unit that has been clobbered together over the last four years. Faf du Plessis is out injured, JP Duminy and Morne Morkel are both away on paternity leave, while Quinton de Kock has been sent away with the A-team to recover some form.

Now that the team has played together as a unit, perhaps they will start to gel together a bit more. The atmosphere at Potchefstroom is always festive, the crowd is vocal and the boundaries are small. The bowlers are in for a tough time but with so many batsmen from both sides in form, there will be plenty of entertainment to look forward to.

This will suit New Zealand well. They have showed that even without Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor they have enough firepower to challenge some of the world’s best bowlers. The weather will be lovely so if you don’t have any other plans for Sunday, settle down and watch some hit and giggle cricket fun.

Key players

South Africa

Dale Steyn wasn't quite back to his best in Centurion yet, but he was certainly getting fired up. It has been difficult for the quicks on these dry, early season pitches, but Steyn has rarely needed assistance to be a menace.

New Zealand

Kane Williamson continues to impress and seems completely undaunted by the extra responsibility of captaincy. He is a key part of the New Zealand batting lineup and with some crafty management of his bowlers during the first ODI, his captaincy has also proven to be vital to the Black Caps.
