Brewers Exec Hired as A's GM After Milwaukee's Historic World Series Title

After watching the Milwaukee Brewers win their first World Series title, the Athletics are hoping to follow their path to success.

The A's are hiring Brewers vice president Cam Castro as their next general manager under new president of baseball operations Taylor Smith, the team announced on Wednesday.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal first reported the news.

Castro wasn't the only Brewers executive to receive interest after the team's World Series title win. Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reported that assistant GM Matt Kleine was offered the Astros' GM job, but "after much deliberation, he declined, deciding to stay in Milwaukee to try and run it back with the Brewers."

Rosenthal noted that during his time in Milwaukee, Castro oversaw player development and performance, and he "holds extensive experience in pitching development." The Brewers ranked second in MLB during the regular season with a collective 3.51 ERA and 1,544 strikeouts.

The A's undoubtedly could use some of Castro's expertise. The team ranked 29th in the majors with a 5.51 ERA on its way to finishing with a 64-98 record this season, missing the playoffs for the sixth straight year. The last time the team won 80 games or more was during the 2021 campaign.

The A's are scheduled to move to Las Vegas in 2028, so they certainly could use some positivity next year to inspire a new fan base in Sin City. Castro will have his work cut out for him, but his impact in Milwaukee should give the A's confidence that he can lead the franchise out of the league's basement and back to playoff contention.
