'No Excuse,' Canadiens' Cole Caufield Rips Historic 4-Goal Collapse vs. Jets, 'It's Terrible'

Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield didn't hold back when discussing his team's shocking meltdown in a 5-4 overtime home loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night.

Speaking to reporters after the Habs squandered a four-goal lead in the third period, Caufield said, "Guys thought the game was over. We had a four-goal lead. There's no excuse for this. It's terrible."

Caufield scored two of the Canadiens' four goals, and they appeared to be cruising toward an easy victory.

Montreal led 4-0 with less than three minutes remaining in regulation, but the Jets inexplicably scored four goals in just over two minutes of game time to tie it.

After goals by Tyrel Bauer and Morgan Barron at 17:21 and 18:03 of the third period, star winger Kyle Connor scored two goals 27 seconds apart to tie the game with just 33 seconds remaining.

That sent the game into overtime where defenseman Dylan Samberg scored 3:30 into the extra session to complete the unbelievable comeback.

Per ESPN's Greg Wyshynski, it marked the latest four-goal comeback in NHL history, starting at 57:21, which broke the previous record by nearly five minutes.

The loss ended a five-game winning streak for Montreal, although it did still manage to get a point for the eighth consecutive game.

Losing in that fashion can be demoralizing for a team, though, making it of the utmost for the Habs to bounce back in their next game against the Utah Mammoth on Thursday.
