Pat Murphy Addresses Viral Video Ripping 'Horses--t' Yankees After Brewers' World Series Win
Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy went viral after his team clinched a World Series title in Game 5 for telling first baseman and pending free agent Jake Bauers that he was going to be a "a rich f--ker" and to "just remember when you are on that horses--t [New York] Yankees team and you guys are all playing for yourselves? Just remember, say, 'This is the way we used to do it.'"
But Murphy, who didn't realize he was on a "hot mic," said he called Yankees general manager Brian Cashman to clarify his remarks.
"I called Brian Cashman right away when I heard [my comments] got out," he said during an appearance on the New York Post's "The Show" podcast (h/t ESPN). "I tried to explain that I wasn't talking about the 2026 Yankees. I was just referring to the teams with a lot of money that sign a lot of players that sometimes end up not being that 'Little Engine that Could,' so to speak—more of a high expectation, 'I gotta get mine.' I regret saying it."
"I felt horribly if I slandered the Yankees, because I was just kind of referring to them as this iconic machine," he added. "... It wasn't smart on my part, and I'm sorry about it."
Murphy said part of his comments were mirroring how he would joke with Bauers throughout the Brewers' run to a title.
"After every celebration, I'd shake his hand and I'd say, 'You rich so-and-so, you're going to leave us,'" he said. "We're not going to be able to pay you. You're going to leave us, and you're going to forget all about how we did things. ... I would just give him this rhetoric every time."
The 31-year-old Bauers, who played for the Yankees in 2023, had a breakout 2026 campaign, setting career highs in homers (26), RBI (86), runs (93), batting average (.266) and OPS (.874). He also caught the final out of the World Series and gifted that ball to Murphy, which was when the manager made his Yankee comments.
While Murphy apologized for those remarks, there have indeed been legitimate questions about the leadership and clubhouse culture of the 2026 Yankees, including from prominent former players of the team like Hall of Famer CC Sabathia. That Murphy, albeit unintentionally, brought further attention to that storyline was hardly ideal for the Yankees.
