Mike Tomlin 'Not Coming Back' to NFL Coaching After Joining Media, Steelers Player Says

Zach BacharNov 3, 2026

Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin may remain in his current media role instead of eventually coming back to patrol the sidelines.

"Guys, he's not coming back," Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward said during a Tuesday appearance on the Rich Eisen Show (0:17 mark). "He's way too comfortable. He's way too comfortable. He told me as soon as we walked in, 'I win every week now.' And I'm like, 'I get that, I get that.' I'm not gonna fight against that because that's a pretty sweet job he's got going on over there."

Tomlin spent 19 seasons as Pittsburgh's head coach from 2007-25, becoming the NFL's longest-tenured coach until he stepped down from his role on Jan. 13.

He eventually became a football analyst for NBC Sports.

Tomlin owned a 193-114-2 overall record with the Steelers, as they never posted a losing season during any year of his stint as head coach. Pittsburgh also captured a Super Bowl title during its 2008 campaign.

It's worth noting that the Steelers experienced a lack of playoff success near the end of his tenure, as their last postseason win occurred during their 2016 season despite making six playoff appearances since then.

Tomlin's overall tenure with Pittsburgh was still extremely successful, which has reportedly led to plenty of interest from NFL teams regarding his potential return to coaching.

He could end up staying in his current job, however.
