The 2026 NFL playoff picture is far from crystallized, but the bracket is at least beginning to materialize after Week 8 wrapped up.
Legitimate contenders have started to separate from the pretenders after two months of play. A handful of teams have proven they have what it takes to navigate through the bracket and reach Super Bowl LXI, although things could change rapidly in the coming months.
Not every team that started hot will reach the playoffs. Teams that stumbled early can still recover. The journey ahead is filled with potential hazards that could cause even current one-loss programs to miss out on the postseason entirely. The road gets easier for several teams that would be on the outside looking in if the playoffs began today. It all sets the stage for a thrilling finish to the 2026 campaign.
With that in mind, let's break down the projected 2026 NFL playoff bracket, including seeding and record predictions for all 14 teams.

AFC Bracket Breakdown

The AFC side of the bracket is a bit more clear cut than its NFC counterpart. Only eight teams have five or more wins ahead of Week 9, while six have two or fewer.
The Bills may not be the most well-rounded squad in football, but they are still finding ways to win every week thanks to an MVP candidate quarterback and high-powered offense. If Josh Allen continues to put the team on his back and the passing defense can slightly improve after a rough start, Buffalo should cruise to the AFC's No. 1 seed.
Denver is surprisingly trending towards the No. 2 seed despite having the opposite problem of the Bills. The Broncos' No. 3-ranked defense is legitimate, but the Bo Nix-led offense is only averaging 273 yards per game—the third-worst mark in football. Head coach Sean Payton is still managing to get his squad up for quality competition, with Denver beating the likes of the Seahawks and Chiefs during its current four-game winning streak.
The Jaguars and Steelers round out the list of projected Wild Card hosts.
Jacksonville is far-and-away the class of the AFC South and is trending towards becoming the first team to lock up a divisional crown in 2026. Pittsburgh is hanging onto a slight lead in a much tougher AFC North race, although that competition has become a touch less fierce after star Ravens QB Lamar Jackson landed on the IR this week.
Despite a two-game losing skid, Kansas City is still well on track to make its 6-11 2025 season look like an outlier. Expect Patrick Mahomes and co. to figure things out and cruise to the team's 11th postseason appearance in 12 years.
Coming in just behind the Chiefs are the long-suffering Bengals, who picked up a big overtime win in Week 8 to remain on pace to return to the playoffs after a three-year hiatus. If Joe Burrow can stay healthy and the defense displays even moderate improvements, Cincinnati will have every reason to believe it can finally break through and win a Super Bowl.
The final AFC playoff spot winds up going to New England. The reigning AFC champions have regressed while playing a far tougher schedule this year, but there is still enough talent on both sides of the ball for this squad to reach the postseason. If Drake Maye can get back to playing anywhere near the MVP-worthy level he reached last year, the Pats will be dangerous come January.

NFC Bracket Breakdown

The NFC playoff race is shaping up to be an all-timer. With only five teams having secured five or more wins by the end of Week 8, all 16 franchises—including a trio of two-win clubs—still have at least a faint glimmer of hope to reach the postseason.
The 49ers took a commanding lead in the NFC West by jumping out to a perfect 6-0 record before finally suffering their first defeat in Week 7. Despite that small setback, San Francisco will have a playoff ticket punched and possibly even a first-round bye secured before the calendar flips to 2027.
The Seahawks don't seem nearly as inevitable this year. The reigning Super Bowl champions got off to a tepid start to their title defense and are in real danger of missing the playoffs entirely after tumbling back to .500 on Monday night. The club is far too experienced and talented to drop out of the running completely, but Seattle will probably begin its quest for back-to-back titles as a No. 7 seed.
The Rams are a slumbering giant that finally began to stir with back-to-back wins. After clawing back to .500, a second-half surge should result in L.A. clinching a respectable No. 6 seed. The door remains open for a potential home Super Bowl appearance at SoFi Stadium to end the season.
Detroit is on track to secure the NFC's No. 2 seed, remaining unbeaten in NFC North play. While the Lions started out with a modest 2-2 record, they are in the midst of a three-game winning streak that includes key victories over the Packers and Vikings. Don't be surprised if those wins end up settling some tiebreakers at the conclusion of the season.
The Bears struggled during Caleb Williams' brief absence, but the QB's return has sparked an offensive explosion. With Ben Johnson at the reins and key trade deadline pickup Jeffery Simmons bolstering the defense, the Windy City will inevitably celebrate a second consecutive playoff berth.
Rounding out the NFC side of the 2027 NFL playoff bracket are a pair of feel-good but ultimately toothless squads in the Giants and Panthers.
Despite losing Jaxson Dart for the year, Blue has still built a big lead in the flawed NFC East. While the G-Men have some sneaky upside if J.J. McCarthy can live up to his vast potential, it's hard to envision this squad being anything more than speed bump in the opening round.
Carolina is on pace to emerge from an atrocious NFC South race with both a losing record and a divisional title for the second straight year. While the team isn't a true contender, Bryce Young's ascendance at least gives this group a shred of hope in the Wild Card round.
