Kyler Murray Injury Update, Latest on Vikings QB's Return Timeline, Severity of Hamstring Strain

Timothy RappNov 7, 2026

Details of Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray's hamstring injury have come out as he will miss at least one game.

Per The Ringer's Tom Pelissero, Murray was diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain that could keep him out beyond just Monday's game against the Buffalo Bills:

"Murray received several medical opinions on the hamstring after last Sunday's loss at Detroit, and the risk of making the injury worse or having Murray alter his style by trying to play this week weren't worth it. So Carson Wentz will start against the Bills, and then the Vikings will reassess Murray's health ahead of their Week 10 NFC North matchup with the Packers."

Pelissero added how Carson Wentz plays against the Bills could impact how Minnesota approaches Murray's rehab because it would be "easier" to be patient if Wentz performs well.

Injuries have been a theme in the 2026 campaign for Murray. The veteran quarterback suffered a concussion the the first game of the season and was held out of a Week 2 win over the Chicago Bears while remaining in the concussion protocol. Backup Carson Wentz appeared in his stead.

And following a Week 8 loss against the Detroit Lions, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed to reporters that Murray was dealing with hamstring soreness and was going through a "full eval," though didn't think his quarterback would miss a Week 9 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

The 29-year-old's first season in Minnesota has been bumpy. While the Vikings (6-1) have been good this season, they've largely been carried by their defense and special teams. Murray has struggled to invigorate the passing offense, posting 1,022 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions through the air this season.

"It's just continuing to build that rapport of the plans, the comfort level," O'Connell told reporters after Murray missed connecting with superstar wideout Justin Jefferson in Week 8 on a number of potential big plays, "[and] continuing to implore some input from him on things he likes and things [where] we carve it and make it even cleaner and better for him so that we do get some of that comfort where he'll throw things with anticipation and we get the look for a play, and we all know it's coming, and we see the pitch and catch there."

The Vikings will look to get back in the win column after suffering their first loss of the season in Week 8 against the Detroit Lions. They are hosting the Bills at U.S. Bank Stadium on Monday Night Football.
