Nikita Kucherov Explains Lightning Trade Request in Video Amid NHL Rumors on Contract Talks
Tampa Bay Lightning star Nikita Kucherov explained his shocking trade request from the team.
The two-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner cited "poor communication" and a lack of respect from the organization. He told reporters his had limited contact of late with general manager Julien BriseBois, as one example, with his free agency looming on the horizon:
Kucherov has spent his entire career in Tampa Bay. He's second all time in goals (405) and first in assists (737) and points (1,142).
The 33-year-old remains an elite forward as well. He finished 2025-26 with 44 goals and 86 assists, and only the Edmonton Oilers' Connor McDavid had more points.
Needless to say, news of Kucherov's request sent shockwaves across the league.
ESPN's Emily Kaplan reported last week his contract situation played a pivotal role: "Negotiations between Tampa Bay and Kucherov's camp remained far apart, sources said, and that gulf led to a meeting Friday in which Kucherov said he would not be re-signing this summer and wanted to play elsewhere."
Kucherov's media availability Monday shed more light on the situation. Whatever the exact specifics, there's clearly a massive divide between the player and team.
BriseBois issued a statement last Friday to say the Lightning "unequivocally have no intention of trading Nikita."
Ahead of a 5-4 loss to the Nashville Predators, coach Jon Cooper told reporters there are no questions as to Kucherov's effort level or commitment, either.
"I will sit here and tell you nothing has changed in what our goals are this year just, maybe, the context of how it is going to go about," he said. "Kuch is 100 percent a part of this team. He wants to be a part of this team for this season and he is committed to be with the group that loves him and the group he loves.
"What I don't want to get skewed in all of this is if Kuch turns the puck over or the play does not go exactly his way and he shows frustration or, at some point, the coach who is coaching him is showing frustration with him or somebody else on the team and, then, everybody says, 'Oh my God. He wants out.' That will not be the case."
Kucherov could escalate things and refuse to suit up for Tampa Bay, which is the route Dylan Larkin has taken with the Detroit Red Wings. In general, a lot can change between now and the March 1, 2027, trade deadline.
As long as he's willing to play, the Lightning are bound to dig in their heels and rebuff any trade offers.
