Anthony Richardson Opens Up on Scary Eye Injury in Video After Replacing Daniel Jones in Colts' Loss

Andrew PetersNov 1, 2026

Anthony Richardson played in his first game since suffering a scary eye injury on Sunday, and the Indianapolis Colts quarterback addressed just how serious his injury was after the game.

"I would go to the doctor, and they would tell me they don't know if I'm getting my vision back and stuff like that," he told reporters. "I'm just grateful that I even get the chance to go out there and throw a pass, regardless of if I step on the field or not, cause there was a day and a time where this wasn't promised for me."

Last October, Richardson was warming up with elastic bands when the equipment he had them tied to malfunctioned and hit him in the face. He suffered an orbital fracture, forcing him to miss the rest of the season.

He didn't regain full vision in his eye until February.

Getting back onto the field is a huge step for Richardson, even if he only played a handful of snaps. Richardson, the former No. 4 overall pick in 2022, completed both of his pass attempts for eight yards in a 42-7 blowout loss to the Jaguars. He replaced starter Daniel Jones late in the game when it was already out of reach.

Richardson's return to action comes at a time when the starting job in Indianapolis is very much in flux. Jones has had a rough campaign after his breakout season last year, throwing for 1,542 yards, five touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Head coach Shane Steichen made it clear after the game that he plans to consider making a change under center.

"I'm gonna evaluate everything," Steichen told reporters after the game. "Every position going forward."

Richardson has had a rough start to his career, missing almost all of his rookie year before struggling in Year 2 and failing to earn the starting job last season. Perhaps he'll get another chance to prove himself as Indianapolis searches for answers.

The Colts dropped to 2-6 with the loss as the playoffs continue to get more out of reach for them.
