Gardner Minshew, Cardinals Upset Cowboys with Epic Comeback After Jacoby Brissett Benched

Scott PolacekNov 1, 2026

It has been a season to forget so far for the Arizona Cardinals, and they made a quarterback change Sunday during the second half of Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys with the hope of sparking some momentum.

It worked.

Arizona benched Jacoby Brissett for Gardner Minshew after falling behind 17-3. Brissett was terrible throughout the game prior to his benching:

The starter went 10-of-23 for 119 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception as the Cardinals fell behind by multiple scores.

And then all Minshew did was rally the visitors to a dramatic 33-30 overtime victory.

Notably, Arizona scored a touchdown on Minshew's drive, although it wasn't because of the quarterback. He did make a seven-yard completion on his first throw before Tyler Allgeier broke loose for a 63-yard touchdown run.

That was just a sign of what was to come, as Minshew found Allgeier and Trey McBride for touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull within three. From there, the Cowboys added a field goal and gave Minshew an opportunity to win it in crunch time trailing by six.

It appeared as if he did when he found Michael Wilson for a touchdown with six seconds remaining, although Chad Ryland missed the extra point that would have won it.

Ryland earned redemption, though, as he connected on the game-winning field goal in overtime after the two defenses traded stops.

Minshew finished 17-of-23 for 188 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions and likely earned himself more playing time moving forward.

Brissett is signed through just this season, so it's not as if the Cardinals are relying on him to be their franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future.

Of course, Minshew is also signed through just this season and is 30 years old. He isn't someone the Cardinals are going to be turning to for seasons to come either, meaning this benching was more about the immediate future than anything else even if he did play the role of hero.

Perhaps they will eventually give Carson Beck a chance if and when the season continues to slip further away following a 3-5 start.

Arizona selected the rookie with a third-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft after he helped lead Miami to the College Football Playoff national championship game. At some point, the NFC West team will likely want to see what it has in the rookie and could respond accordingly after benching Brissett.

For now, though, it appears as if Minshew is going to get an opportunity for a Cardinals team looking for some type of spark.
