'Best Catcher in The World,' Brewers' William Contreras Hypes Himself After World Series MVP Win

Modesty isn't necessary when you've just been named the World Series MVP.

The Milwaukee Brewers secured their first World Series title with a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night. Catcher William Contreras got singled out for his performance across the five games and was understandably riding a high.

"I don't want to offend any of the other catchers in the league. The last thing I want to do is offend any of them," he said through an interpreter, per the Associated Press' Ronald Blum. "But sitting up here today, champion of the world, I feel like I'm the best catcher in the league. Again, that's no disrespect to any of them. That's the last thing I want to do. But today I feel like I'm the best catcher in the world."

Contreras batted .381 and had a .435 on-base percentage in the World Series. Blum noted how his contributions behind the plate might have surpassed his offensive production. The three-time All-Star threw out four base stealers and correctly challenged 10 out of 13 pitches.

Some will push back on Contreras' assertion that he's the best catcher in the game.

His 3.0 WAR ranked fifth at the position at FanGraphs, well behind the Arizona Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno in first (5.4). There's also the question of how much Cal Raleigh's reputation should take a hit after the Seattle Mariners catcher fell off badly from his 2025 performance.

But Contreras earned the right to brag after playing such an important role in a championship triumph.
