NFL Exec Links Cowboys to Josh Sweat Trade at 2026 Deadline, 'Makes a Lot of Sense'
Some NFL teams are expecting the Arizona Cardinals to follow up their trade of Marvin Harrison Jr. to the Houston Texans by parting ways with edge rusher Josh Sweat, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday.
According to Fowler, "rival teams could see [Sweat] getting moved" ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
One NFC executive told Fowler: "Sweat to Dallas makes a lot of sense to me. That's a profile fit."
Fowler noted there are rumors 29-year-old Sweat wants an extension despite already being signed through 2028, which "could complicate" a potential trade. He still named the Cowboys as well as the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers as potential "team fits" for Sweat.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a Tuesday appearance on 105.3 The Fan he felt it was "unlikely" the Cowboys' defense would get the opportunity to add a player from outside the organization this season, per DallasCowboys.com's Tommy Yarrish.
"But if it's there, I'll do it," Jones added, per Yarrish.
Discussion of the Cowboys' edge depth is taking place after the organization traded a 2027 fourth-round draft pick to the Green Bay Packers in order to acquire Rashan Gary over the offseason.
Cowboys just improved to 3-4 and upped their chances of winning the NFC East with a Monday night win over the Eagles, but Gary and the Dallas pass rush once more struggled to put pressure on a Philadelphia offense that recorded 200 yards through the air.
Sweat, who is in the second year of his four-year, $76.4 million deal with the Cardinals, has recorded two sacks, 16 tackles (three for loss) and four quarterback hits in seven games this season.
He has added 12 pressures, 10 stops and eight hurries, according to PFF, but popped up on the Cardinals injury report earlier this fall after undergoing an undisclosed procedure this offseason.
Sweat's health, the Cardinals' asking price and the Cowboys' willingness to further chip away at their limited 2027 draft stock in a push to win an injury-weakened division could determine how seriously Jones considers a potential trade.
Jones will get his next look at Sweat this Sunday, when the Cardinals (2-5) arrive in Dallas for a 1 p.m. ET Week 8 matchup.
